After parting ways with John Moore and Urho Vaakanainen a few days ago, Boston is looking to add defensive depth before making another run at the Stanley Cup. Brown is in his fourth NHL season and plays a defence-focused game. His large stature (6’5″, 221 pounds) and physical playstyle will fit in well with Boston’s preferred style of play. As long as he isn’t asked to play up the lineup, Brown can provide a bit of stability on the blueline. Boston is in a tough division and will need all the depth help they can find.

For Ottawa, this trade adds more youth and depth to their forward group. Senyshyn, a first-round pick in 2015, has only played 14 NHL games (scoring 4 points) but is still only 24 years old. Senyshyn did not get many opportunities to play in the NHL on the veteran-heavy Bruins, but look for the Senators to give him opportunities to thrive on a more youthful squad. The Senators may have more moves in store yet today too, which would likely only further his opportunity.

Going Forward

It is most likely that Senyshyn caps out as a fourth-line player. However, for Ottawa, that would be a win. Josh Brown was a UFA and gone this summer so regardless, getting an asset for him is a good move. For Boston, a cheap pickup could prove to be very valuable in their division. This is the second year in a row the Sens have sold the Bruins a defenceman at the deadline.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

The Boston Bruins have acquired defenseman Josh Brown and a conditional 2022 seventh-round pick from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forward Zach Senyshyn and a 2022 fifth-round pick.
