The Harnosand, Sweden also earned his first career shutout this season with Ottawa.

He’s played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes and Senators over his seven-year NHL career. The 29-year-old has a career record of 29-41-7 with a 3.05 goals-against-average. Forsberg also has a shutout that he earned this season and a .908 save percentage over his career. Columbus originally drafted him in the seventh round, 188th overall of the 2011 NHL Draft.

He’s also represented his native Sweden on the international level. Forsberg was part of the gold-medal winning squad at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships.

What it Means

Forsberg has filled in well this season for the Senators while Matt Murray struggled and others got hurt. It’s not been the best season for Ottawa, but the Swedish stopper has been a bright spot.

The goalie will finally have some consistency in his career as he’s bounced around in the early part of his career. It took him time to get regular work in the crease, but he’ll have that with Ottawa.

Murray may have turned things around in recent weeks, but it will be nice to have Forsberg as an insurance policy. He hopefully won’t have to worry about getting dealt again and may get a shot at the starting gig in the future.

Ottawa hopes that this is the last year of being mediocre and can finally make a move up the Atlantic Division standings. Injuries have hampered the Senators, but there are some quality younger players on the squad.

Embed from Getty Images

The Ottawa Senators have extended goalie Anton Forsberg on Monday.
