From getting drafted 34th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft until now, Dermott dedicated all he had to Toronto. However, Leafs fans had a love/hate relationship with the 25-year-old Ontario native. And for a while now, his name was tossed around in the trade rumours, especially when the deadline got closer. Now, Dermott and the Leafs part ways after five long years.

[pickup_prop id=”19126″]

What Led To The Dermott Trade

The biggest problem for Dermott in Toronto was the lack of stability, this season especially. He was constantly changing pairs and sides and that was likely too much for him. Instead of settling down with a partner like many are in other teams, he was constantly switching pairs, playing with Justin Holl, Timothy Liljegren or Rasmus Sandin. Wherever he was needed, he went there and tried to do well. However, it started to become a problem and Dermott wasn’t able to find his groove in either defence or offence. Things got too tricky. Now, the defenceman will go to his new home ready for a fresh start to get his game together.

What This Means For The Future

The truth is: Dermott, as good as he might be, is expendable. With both Liljegreen and Sandin heating up this season and a few of their prospects showing potential, Dermott was left behind. The best thing for both the player and the team was a trade. Dermott became a good trading chip because of his age and price, which is more appealing than Holl, for example. Trading the 25-year-old now gives Toronto more cap flexibility at the deadline and helps to acquire other assets.

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly traded defenceman Travis Dermott to the Vancouver Canucks.
