Castonguay&#8217;s hiring is historic, becoming the first woman to ever hold the position in Canucks history. However, she&#8217;s the second woman to hold that position in the NHL. The first was Angela Gorgone, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeynews.com\/news\/how-angela-gorgone-became-the-nhl-s-first-female-assistant-gm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who acted as Assistant General Manager<\/a> of the Anaheim Ducks in 1996.<\/p>\r\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Canucks President, Hockey Operations and Interim General Manager Jim Rutherford announced today that \u00c9milie Castonguay has been named Assistant General Manager.<br>Castonguay becomes the first female Assistant General Manager in team history.<br><br>DETAILS | <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/92bL8fQTUv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/92bL8fQTUv<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lvwbWApcCQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/lvwbWApcCQ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Vancouver Canucks (@Canucks) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Canucks\/status\/1485681358978445314?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 24, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\r\n<h2>\u00c9milie Castonguay Hired As The First Canucks Woman Assistant General Manager<\/h2>\r\n<p>The announcement came from Vancouver&#8217;s President, Hockey Operations and interim General Manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rutheji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Rutherford<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;\u00c9milie has extensive experience, is driven to succeed,&#8221; said Rutherford <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/canucks\/news\/emilie-castonguay-named-assistant-general-manager\/c-330129258\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a team news release<\/a>. &#8220;She will play a lead role in player contracts and negotiation, managing the collective bargaining agreement, and her voice will be heard in all aspects of hockey operations.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>She is the second player agent to be hired for an NHL management role this month. The first was Kent Hughes, who is now General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens. Castonguay, however, was in The Hockey News list of top 20 candidates to become the first woman in a general manager position.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;When Kent Hughes was listed as one of the final candidates for the Montreal Canadiens vacancy, \u00c9milie Castonguay should have been mentioned in the same breath,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeynews.com\/news\/who-will-become-the-first-woman-to-serve-as-an-nhl-gm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the article said<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Castonguay&#8217;s Background And Experience With Hockey<\/h3>\r\n<p>Before being hired by the Canucks, Castonguay was representing 2020 first overall draft pick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lafreal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexis Lafreniere<\/a>, and Team Canada captain Marie-Philip Poulin. She also served as Momentum Hockey group\u2019s Director of Legal Affairs and Hockey Operations. Castonguay holds a Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Finance from Niagara University, where she played four years of NCAA hockey for Niagara. She also has a law degree from l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al. In addition, Castonguay gained front office experience interning with the Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier while going to University.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;It is an honour to join the Vancouver Canucks and I am grateful to Jim and the Aquilini family for the opportunity,&#8221; said Castonguay in the Canucks&#8217; release. &#8220;The Canucks have a passionate fanbase and an exciting young team with a bright future. I can&#8217;t wait to help build a winning organization that continues to grow and challenges for the championship.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>While they now have an assistant general manager, the Vancouver Canucks are still on the hunt for a person to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2022\/01\/19\/looking-for-next-canucks-general-manager\/\" target=\"_self\">fill the general manager&#8217;s position<\/a>.
