Over the last four years, he’s played in and out of the NHL, scoring 12 points in 41 games. His work during the 2021-22 NHL preseason upgraded his AHL contract to a two-year deal. It appears he’ll start on the fourth line with the Jets, likely earning a bit of power play time to bolster scoring.

Svechnikov was originally drafted in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft, 15th overall by the Detroit Red Wings. The 25-year-old will start the season in Winnipeg, and if he keeps it up, he’ll remain with the Jets for the foreseeable future.

What This Means for the Team

Winnipeg has earned a solid depth scorer in Svechnikov. The former Red Wing has been praised for his work ethic throughout his career. He’ll be a fixture on the team’s bottom-six and a good presence in the locker room for the Jets as they seek their next playoff berth. This signing is l0w-risk. If he fails to meet his expectations, they can send him to Manitoba in the AHL without any hassle. If he impresses, he’ll be in line to earn another (likely affordable) contract. There’s a lot to like about this deal and there’s plenty to enjoy when it comes to Svechnikov, who turns 26 this Halloween.

Main Photo: Embed from Getty Images

The Winnipeg Jets have signed former first-round pick Evgeny Svechnikov to a one-year, tw0-way contract.
