The deal will carry an average cap of $2.65 million. The team announced the deal Saturday evening.

https://twitter.com/Canucks/status/1426691408342171651?s=20

Canucks Sign Jason Dickinson

Dickinson had a respectable season for the Dallas Stars in 2020-21. The seasoned forward posted seven goals and 15 points in 51 games in his age-25 season. He also averaged a career-best in average ice time of 16;12. Dickinson’s 50.1 percent Corsi For and -3.1 relative Corsi aren’t great, but they aren’t terrible either for someone who started far more often in the defensive zone; 60.6 percent of zone starts in one’s own end can produce much worse possession numbers.

The Stars originally drafted Dickinson 29th overall in the 2013 Draft and he debuted in briefly in 2015-16. However, his full-time foray didn’t come until 2017-18 when he appeared in 27 games with two assists. Dallas traded Dickenson in July for the 73rd overall selection that because Ayrton Martino. Overall, the Georgetown, Ontario native has collected 25 goals and 63 points in 221 games. Much of that has come in the last three seasons, so perhaps there is a chance for increased productivity in Vancouver’s system.

What This Means

Dickinson is an easy projection for the Canucks’ roster going into 2021-22. They have fairly thin depth down the middle of the ice with little prospect depth. That means the former Star has a fantastic opportunity to anchor the team’s third line. That could put him in a position to support other intriguing players like Nils Hoglander and Vasily Podkolzin. This move doesn’t have a huge upside, but it is hard to see it going wrong at such a reasonable cost.

Vancouver still has a healthy amount of money left to sign two key restricted free agents. They had just over $13.3 million before the Dickinson signing, so that leaves roughly $11 million left to retain both Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes. Expect those to be the next big dominos to fall as the team prepares for the coming season.

Main Photo: Embed from Getty Images

The Vancouver Canucks have signed veteran forward Jason Dickinson to a three-year deal as the offseason continues.
