The Carolina Hurricanes have signed a contract extension with forward Jordan Martinook on the first day of free agency. The new deal is for three years with an annual cap hit of $1.8 million. Elliotte Friedman reported the news Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Martnook was a solid secondary contributor in 2020-21. He scored four goals and 13 points in 37 games on top of 90 hits and 20 blocks. He also managed to post a 51.4 percent Corsi For, but the team was somewhat less productive overall due to his -2.7 relative Corsi. Martinook’s numbers are reasonable when you consider that he was on a deep team and averaged just 12:45 of ice time per night.<\/p>\n
The Arizona Coyotes<\/a> originally drafted Martinook in the second round of the 2012 Draft, but his first significant action did not come until 2014-15. He skated in Arizona for several seasons before being sent<\/a> to Carolina in 2018 in exchange for Marcus Kruger and a draft pick. Overall, Martinook has mostly been a checking forward with 605 hits and 241 blocks, but he also has a respectable 47 goals and 116 points in 418 NHL games. He is getting older at 29 years old, but there are many productive years left for the Brandon, Manitoba native.<\/p>\n Carolina will have a fairly well-stocked roster heading into 2021-22, but there will be space somewhere for Martinook. He was one of the team’s secondary face-off men and contributed to the penalty-kill unit as well. He provides good value for a talented team at just $1.8 million for each of the next three seasons.<\/p>\n Carolina has been one of the most active teams so far in free agency. They have signed or traded for several players including<\/a> Frederik Anderson and<\/a> Ethan Bear. They still have roughly $15 million with which to sign other players as well.
