We take a look at Pacific Division Team Needs in the NHL Draft.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockeyprospects.com\/2017-NHL-Entry-Draft-Headquarters\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 NHL Entry Draft<\/a> is a little different than what has been the norm for the last few years. Compared to years past, the lack of top-end talent available is significant. This will likely prompt teams to seek out organizational need at their selections rather than grab the best player available; unless the value is simply too good to pass on. In considering what each team needs to look for in this years draft; we will continue on with Pacific Division Team Needs.<\/p>\n<h2>2017 NHL Entry Draft \u2013 Pacific Division Team Needs<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Anaheim Ducks<br \/>\nDraft position: 50th overall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Ducks handed over their first round selection in exchange for\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/eavespa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Eaves<\/a><\/strong> at the trade deadline. Fortunately they will draft at 50th courtesy of a condition from last summer&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frederik Andersen<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>deal.<\/p>\n<p>Anaheim hasn&#8217;t selected above 24th overall in any of the last four drafts, but has done a formidable job stockpiling youth. Losing\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/theodsh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shea Theodore<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to Vegas could cause the Ducks to strengthen their depth on defence with their first pick.<\/p>\n<p>Multi-dimensional defensemen\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/06\/09\/markus-phillips-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_self\">Markus Phillips<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/06\/16\/dylan-samberg-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-78\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Dylan Samberg<\/strong><\/a> are expected to go around when Anaheim announces its pick. If the Ducks are worried about\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=gibsojo02,gibsojo01&amp;search=John+Gibson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Gibson<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s inability to stay healthy, Quinnipiac-bound goaltender\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/05\/26\/keith-petruzzelli-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-57\/\" target=\"_self\">Keith Petruzzelli<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>raised eyebrows this past season.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Arizona Coyotes<br \/>\nDraft position: 7th overall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Arizona parted with long time centre\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hanzama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Hanzal<\/a><\/strong> at the trade deadline and received a nice haul of draft picks from Minnesota. They&#8217;ll select at 7th as well as 23rd, supplementing the quality of the current system.<\/p>\n<p>The Coyotes forward prospects are beginning to create a traffic jam at the NHL level, with too many inexperienced youth and not enough veteran presence. Arizona should look to shift a few prospects for a player such as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stepade01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Stepan<\/a><\/strong>, who has drawn interest from the club.<\/p>\n<p>General manager\u00a0<strong>John Chayka\u00a0<\/strong>knows his team is likely still a few years away, and isn&#8217;t in a rush to shake up the club&#8217;s culture.\u00a0The &#8216;Yotes could hope either\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/03\/cody-glass-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-6\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Cody Glass<\/strong><\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/03\/31\/gabriel-vilardi-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-3\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Gabriel Vilardi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0fall to them at 7. With their second first round pick, they could also be suitors for goalie\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/05\/05\/jake-oettinger-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-36\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Jake Oettinger<\/strong><\/a>, who would improve a vulnerability in Arizona&#8217;s system.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Calgary Flames<br \/>\nDraft position: 16th overall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There is no doubt this team is on the rise, with its trio of youth\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gaudrjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Gaudreau<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/monahse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Monahan<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tkachma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Tkachuk<\/a><\/strong> all hovering around their respective ceilings.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bennesa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Bennett<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>should eventually be able to contribute at the same level as the aforementioned three studs. However, the young aggressor didn&#8217;t have as prolific a sophomore season as the organization and its fans would have liked.<\/p>\n<p>Equipping Bennett with a wing for the future could make Calgary much more dangerous top to bottom. The Flames should look at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/18\/kristian-vesalainen-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-19\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Kristian Vesalainen<\/strong><\/a>, a sizeable winger that could be an effective set-up man on Bennett&#8217;s left side.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Edmonton Oilers<br \/>\nDraft position: 22nd overall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now that the Oilers are out of the deep, dark woods that is the rebuild process, they can draft players with a clear vision of how they will fit into their team.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/eberljo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Eberle<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s departure leaves a void for an impact player on the right side. Edmonton is hoping that they will get exactly that from 2016 first rounder\u00a0<strong>Jesse Puljujarvi<\/strong>\u00a0who had difficulty adapting to the North American game.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having the league&#8217;s MVP on their side, the Oilers can&#8217;t help but envy the Flames having an impact player like\u00a0<strong>John Gaudreau<\/strong>. Why wouldn&#8217;t the Oilers go out and try to get their own in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/22\/kailer-yamamoto-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-23\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Kailer Yamamoto<\/strong><\/a>? A skilled speedster that improves the play of his counterparts is just what the doctor ordered.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Los Angeles Kings<br \/>\nDraft position: 11th overall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A culture change appears imminent in La La Land, after missing out on the postseason in two of the last three seasons.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sutteda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darryl Sutter<\/a><\/strong> isn&#8217;t in charge anymore, meaning the Kings could stray from a possession-heavy approach to improve on scoring &#8211; where they ranked bottom five last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Kings aren&#8217;t getting any younger, ranking among the leagues&#8217; top five in average age. The window for success seems to be shrinking if anything, and Los Angeles needs to act quickly and start building for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Having not selected earlier than 15th since 2009, the Kings could leave the draft with a premier prospect. Snipers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/09\/eeli-tolvanen-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-11\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Eeli Tolvanen<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/04\/owen-tippett-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-7\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Owen Tippett<\/strong><\/a> could be of immense value to a team that&#8217;s been struggling to score like Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>San Jose Sharks<br \/>\nDraft position: 19th overall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is a big off-season for San Jose. Will they move on from long time veterans and unrestricted free agents\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/thornjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Thornton<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marlepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Marleau<\/a><\/strong>? A first round exit to the Oilers may have signaled the swan song for both generational players in the Sharks organization.<\/p>\n<p>Former first rounders <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/muellmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mirco Mueller<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/goldoni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikolay Goldobin<\/a><\/strong> were shipped out and the graduation of<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/labanke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Labanc<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/meierti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timo Meier<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0leaves the Sharks prospect pool noticeably shallow. Now it&#8217;s up to general manager\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilsodo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Wilson<\/a><\/strong> to envision the future of his team.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/29\/erik-brannstrom-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-30\/\" target=\"_self\">Erik Br\u00e4nnstr\u00f6m<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is a deft puck-moving defenseman, who would be a welcome addition to a prospect pool devoid of high-upside rearguards.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/23\/robert-thomas-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-24\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Robert Thomas\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>is the latest from the prospect factory in London, and is one of the more complete centres in this draft.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Vancouver Canucks<br \/>\nDraft position: 5th overall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>General manager\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/benniji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Benning<\/a><\/strong> has finally focused in on what the Canucks should&#8217;ve done when the former Bruins scout was brought in to manage. Benning received assets for <strong>Alexandre Burrows<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hanseja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jannik Hansen<\/a><\/strong>, an effort to right the ship before it&#8217;s primed for an additional decade below the water line.<\/p>\n<p>Losing behemoth defenseman\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tryamni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikita Tryamkin<\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/canucks-defenceman-nikita-tryamkin-returning-khl\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was strange and untimely<\/a>, but the Canucks have a nice core of young defensemen. It makes sense to cash out on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tanevch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Tanev<\/a><\/strong> while Vancouver remains a lottery team, but only if Benning can get considerable value for one of the league&#8217;s most underrated defensemen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cody Glass<\/strong> is a product of the Portland Winterhawks, where new head coach <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/greentr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travis Green<\/a><\/strong> used to coach. Glass was very productive at even strength in a year where he skyrocketed up the rankings, the Canucks need a number one centre and Glass fits the prototype.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Vegas Golden Knights<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Draft position: 6th overall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Three picks in the top 15, five in the top 45 &#8211; the Golden Knights top priority is to build a prospect system from scratch. A tough task, especially given how rich some team&#8217;s youth corps are.<\/p>\n<p>General manager\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcphege01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George McPhee<\/a><\/strong> can afford to go best player available at his early picks, and even try and package a few picks together to trade up if the team has a good grade on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/03\/29\/nico-hischier-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-2\/\" target=\"_self\">Nico Hischier<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/03\/29\/nolan-patrick-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-1\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Nolan Patrick<\/strong><\/a>. If anything, Vegas went for higher quality forwards over defensemen at the expansion draft.<\/p>\n<p>If the Knights stand pat, at least one of defensemen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/07\/cale-makar-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-9\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Cale Makar<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/04\/11\/miro-heiskanen-scouting-report-2017-nhl-draft-13\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Miro Heiskanen<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0should available.
