The Penguins announced the signing via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. Additionally, the one-way contract carries an average annual value of $2.2 million through the 2022-23 season.

Teddy Blueger Re-Signs with Pittsburgh

Blueger has yet to play a full 82-game season over his 3-year NHL experience, all as a member of the Penguins organization. So far, the 26-year-old has potted 22 goals and 32 assists for 54 points in 140 career NHL games. He was selected in the second round, 52nd overall in the 2012 Entry Draft.

This past season, Blueger recorded 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 43 games. This tied his total of 22 points in the 2019-20 season, but this time coming in 26 fewer games. He also added 16 penalty minutes to compliment his point totals.

The young centreman has provided excellent defensive value for the Penguins so far in his career. According to data from Evolving Hockey, Blueger provided a steady impact on both sides of the puck this past season. He recorded a wins-above-replacement value (WAR) of 1.1. Blueger also posted an offensive value (OFF) of 2.6 and a defensive value (DEF) of 2.7.

What This Means for the Future

Teddy Blueger has provided strong defensive metrics throughout his career, as his offensive value took a big step this past season. He will most likely serve as the Penguin’s third-line center next season, as well as continue to be a top-tier penalty killer for the club. Blueger got a fair annual average for his new deal, a bridge deal for his first contract outside of his entry-level deal.

With the Penguins most likely trading a few pieces of the offense this summer, we can expect to see a massive role increase of Blueger next season. A point increase is very likely as his offensive game will continue to make massive strides for the upcoming season. A very underrated forward for the future of the Black and Gold.

Embed from Getty Images

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed forward, Teddy Blueger to a two-year contract extension.
