This will keep the 52-year-old in Montreal through the 2023-24 season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/CanadiensMTL\/status\/1415315283607265281<\/p>\n<h3>Montreal Canadiens Sign Luke Richardson to Contract Extension<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luke Richardson became somewhat of a household name during this year\u2019s Stanley Cup Playoff run with the Montreal Canadiens. He served as Head Coach for five games while <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/06\/18\/montreal-canadiens-dominque-ducharme-in-isolation\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Dominique Ducharme was quarantined with COVID-19<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montreal didn\u2019t miss a beat while Richardson was at the helm, guiding the team to three wins to beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/07\/07\/2021-vegas-golden-knights-offseason-primer\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> in the semifinals. He was also Head Coach for the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals before Ducharme returned for Game 3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richardson began his coaching career in 2008 as an assistant with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>. From there, he served as the Head Coach of their farm team in Binghamton. He amassed a 153-120-31 record in 304 AHL regular-season games from 2012 to 2016. Richardson joined the New York Islanders for a season in 2017, then landed in Montreal in 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all followed a 21-year, 1417-game career as an NHL defenseman. He played for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bluejackets\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> and Ottawa Senators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What This Means for the Canadiens<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the second signing General Manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bergema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Bergevin<\/a> has made behind the Canadiens bench this offseason, removing the interim tag off Ducharme the previous day. It\u2019s clear that Bergevin &#8211; whose own contract is up at the end of next season &#8211; is trying to solidify whatever pieces he can make another deep Stanley Cup run.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do that, some depth spots will have to be filled in Montreal&#8217;s bottom six.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/danauph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phillip Danault<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/perryco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Perry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/armiajo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Armia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/staaler01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Staal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatarto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tomas Tatar<\/a> are all unrestricted free agents. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kotkaje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesperi Kotkaniemi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lehkoar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artturi Lehkonen<\/a> will be restricted free agents. Additionally, Bergevin will have to figure out who to protect in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/06\/30\/2021-seattle-kraken-expansion-draft-montreal-canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Expansion Draft<\/a>, with the team having more valuable pieces than it does protected spots available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, the Montreal Canadiens will look different next year. Richardson\u2019s signing is a means for Bergevin to control what he can before things get hectic in the short offseason.
