Boston Bruins defenceman Kevan Miller<\/a> announced his retirement on Wednesday. The 33-year-old played seven seasons and 352 games in the NHL.<\/p>\n

Kevan Miller Retires<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Injuries have not been kind to Kevan Miller. He suffered through multiple knee surgeries, which prevented him from playing during the 2019-20 season. Then, during Boston’s most recent first-round series against the Washington Capitals<\/a>, a high hit from Dmitry Orlov<\/a> resulted in a hospital stay and concussion for Miller. In his retirement note on Instagram, the California native wrote, “Although my spirit for the game is there, unfortunately, my body isn’t.” Ultimately, it seems that his decision to hang up the skates was a precaution against further dangerous injuries.<\/p>\n

During the 2020-21 season, Miller recorded 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points to go along with 20 penalty minutes. His possession numbers were 48.9 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -8.9. Throughout his NHL career, Miller has remained with the Boston Bruins. He recorded 13 goals and 58 assists for a total of 71 career points. In addition, he tallied 571 blocks and 776 hits. Originally, Miller was an undrafted free agent before signing in Boston in 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n

What This Means for the Future<\/h3>\n

Miller was never an elite defenceman for the Bruins, but he was nonetheless a solid part of the blue line when healthy. He averaged over 18 minutes of ice time over his career. Last season, his TOI even exceeded his personal norm; he recorded around 19 minutes per game. The Bruins’ defence was not a strong point this season, as several other blueliners were also sidelined with injuries. They’ll need to find a reliable player to fill Miller’s absence by the time next season rolls around.<\/p>\n

For Miller, stepping away from the game at this point may ultimately be the best decision. Hopefully, choosing to retire will help preserve his long-term health and ensure his well-being going forward.<\/p>\n
