He’s well-known for his roles on television broadcasts. Prior to joining the Senators, McGuire was an analyst for the NHL on NBC, where he typically handled the “Inside the Glass” segment. Before working with NBC, he appeared on broadcasts for TSN. McGuire has experience with a variety of hockey media, having contributed to numerous radio broadcasts and podcasts in addition to his work on television.

In the past, McGuire has also held coaching positions with several organizations. He served as assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early 1990s. Soon after, accepted a role as assistant coach and assistant general manager for the Hartford Whalers. McGuire is already familiar with the Ottawa Senators, as he held a scouting role with the team in 1995 and 1996.

What This Means for the Future

In recent years, the Ottawa Senators haven’t found much success. The team hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2016-17 season. They also haven’t finished above second-to-last in their division since then. During the 2020-21 season, the Senators came in sixth out of seven teams in the North Division, with a record of 23-28-5.

In McGuire, the Senators gain a man with decades of experience in hockey. He combines the analyst’s attention to detail with practical experience from his role as an assistant coach. His role in player development will be especially important as Ottawa tries to shape its prospects and young players (like 2020 first-round pick Tim Stützle) into a team with the potential to find playoff success. It will certainly be interesting to see what McGuire can do for the Senators.

Main Photo: Embed from Getty Images

The Ottawa Senators announced on Monday that they have hired Pierre McGuire as senior vice president of player development.
