The Knights have been one of the best organizations in hockey at developing young talent and were already stacked on the blueline in 2019-20. Mailloux got in just four games with the Knights as an OHL rookie. Instead, Mailloux played 48 games for the London Nationals in the GOJHL. He scored 18 goals and 50 assists for 68 points in 48 games. He also had two goals and two assists for four points in five playoff games. Mailloux led the league in points by a rookie. He won a number of awards including OHA Top Prospect, GOJHL Rookie of the Year, and Most Outstanding First Year Defenseman for his efforts.

He was expected to play in the OHL this season, but the global pandemic meant that the league never had a season. Mailloux went to Sweden, where he played for Lejon in the Hockey Ettan, the third division of Swedish Men’s Hockey. He put up seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 19 games.

Logan Mailloux Scouting Report

Right Defence — shoots Right
Born April 15th, 2003 — Belle River, Ontario
Height 6’3″ — Weight 212 lbs [191 cm / 96 kg]

Skating

Mailloux has excellent size and combines this with strong skating ability. He has a good first step and a powerful stride that gives him very good acceleration. His top-end speed is also good in both directions. This allows Mailloux to push the play forward and still get back defensively. With his good crossovers and edgework, he has excellent agility and mobility. This allows Mailloux to walk the line and open up passing and shooting lanes. It also helps his gap control. Mailloux is also strong on his skates. He wins battles on the boards as well as in front of the net. He should only get better as he adds muscle to his frame.

Offensive Game

Mailloux has an absolute cannon of a slap shot. He has one of the best point shots in the draft class. He also has an excellent one-timer and is able to adjust his feet to get it off even when the pass isn’t the greatest. Mailloux also has an excellent wrist shot. He can sneak into the top of the circles to let it go. Mailloux is also able to use it off the rush. He has a quick release. Mailloux is also able to toe-drag the puck and change his release angle.

Mailloux is a good stickhandler and can carry the puck through the neutral zone. This helps him to lead the rush as well as get effective zone entries on the powerplay. Mailloux makes a good first pass out of the zone and can quarterback the play at the blue line. He has the poise to hold the puck and the vision and passing skill to create scoring chances from the point. Mailloux is aggressive in joining the rush as well as pinching in from the blue line to keep the play alive. There are times when he is overly aggressive though, and this can lead to chances against.

Defensive Game

Mailloux’s defensive game is a bit of a work in progress. His skating ability allows him to maintain good gap control. He is extremely physical and is always looking for the opportunity to throw a big hit. Mailloux loves to stand up his man at the line and prevent zone entries. He is good at winning battles on the boards and in front of the net. Mailloux can struggle containing especially speedy forwards though. A particularly shifty player can seem to cross him up one on one. He also needs to be better at using his stick to cut down passing lanes as well as to stay with his man away from the puck.

Projection and Comparison

Mailloux seems to have plenty of tools. However, due to circumstances beyond his control he has not yet played against a high level of competition. This leaves plenty of questions about how his skills will translate at the OHL level and higher. He is a real boom or bust prospect as his ceiling is a top-four defender who contributes offensively and on the power play. However there is a chance that he struggles, especially defensively against better competition. Mailloux’s game is reminiscent of Seth Jones. This is a stylistic comparison only though and not one based on skill and ability.

Highlights

The following is a compilation of some of the highlight packages and features of Logan Mailloux that are available on youtube and Twitter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_Vx_P2oMZ4&list=PLOgBIUfkk2BOaJ89Zmdv-Qqsua2riMPQN

London Knights defenceman Logan Mailloux is headed to SK Lejon 🇸🇪 on loan.
