{"id":112120,"date":"2021-06-16T11:59:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T15:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/?p=112120"},"modified":"2021-06-16T11:59:00","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T15:59:00","slug":"north-division-upsets-cup-winning-formula","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/06\/16\/north-division-upsets-cup-winning-formula\/","title":{"rendered":"North Division Upsets Call Stanley Cup-winning Formula Into Question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many established championship-calibre teams such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Bruins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tranced into the Second Round of this year\u2019s Stanley Cup Playoffs, the North Division has completely defied expectations since the puck dropped on this year\u2019s postseason. The North Division upsets of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montreal Canadiens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winnipeg Jets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edmonton Oilers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, respectively, have raised interesting questions in a postseason that\u2019s otherwise gone pretty much as planned.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>North Division Upsets Create Absence of Top Players<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four of the most dynamic players this season &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Auston Matthews<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marnemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitch Marner<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leon Draisaitl<\/a> &#8212; are all no longer playing hockey. Both the Leafs and Oilers have significant dollars devoted to top stars. Hypotheses of teams not being able to win with big contracts are flying around. As more players are demanding market value of over $10 million per season, it\u2019s a valid question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Matthews and the Maple Leafs, this is a pattern of five straight first-round losses. However, they\u2019ve yet to make it through a series, as the favourite, with a healthy roster. Similarly, for the Oilers, inexperience is a factor. McDavid had only made the playoffs once prior to this season, and their dominant play was shut down by one of the best, if not the best goalie in the league in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/helleco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor Hellebuyck<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all calls into question &#8211; is there a formula for building a champion? Do these teams need to make major changes to adhere to it? Or is it wiser to stay on the path of most resistance, grinding out continuous losses until a breakthrough?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How To Build a Champion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent champions, such as the Lightning, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Louis Blues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Capitals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, would seem to suggest that staying the course can have a big payoff despite nearly a decade of disappointment. Despite being on a shorter timeline, a couple of former <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Islanders <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">champions would seem to agree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou know what, we had a couple of teams in 1978 and 1979 that we really thought we were right there at that point, especially in \u201979 when we won the Presidents\u2019 Trophy. I have to compliment Bill Torrey and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/arboual01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Arbour<\/a> for being patient and when they picked up Butch and Kenny, that made a big difference. All the guys came together really, really well. We went out together at night, you know. We had a good group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite not being directly comparable to the Leafs\u2019 and Oilers\u2019 situations, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.betway.com%2Fnhl%2Fclark-gillies-and-bobby-nystrom-on-how-to-win-the-stanley-cup%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cben.mendelowitz%40betwaygroup.com%7Cfed158dd5527495ba3a908d92047e27e%7Ca846695f8a0c4f65a4af9ce3266a6c1b%7C0%7C0%7C637576315403719248%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=jbgGEhYGJJFeLGguMi5kClFMCEKuW06gGZPL0ytTyq0%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another former Islanders teammate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gillicl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clark Gillies<\/a> agrees: \u201cI agree totally with Bob, it was a real learning process for us. It took losing those two years against Toronto and the Rangers. It took losing to help us figure out what we needed to do to put the effort in to win.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Moving Forward in the North<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a path forward in the playoffs for the Habs, but not a very wide one. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/betway.com\/en\/sports\/grp\/ice-hockey\/north-america\/nhl\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has Montreal at 15.00 outright to win the Stanley Cup, the lowest odds of the remaining teams due to trailing 1-0 in their Semifinal series against the Vegas Golden Knights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It sounds ridiculous, maybe even insane. But many other stars have had repeated defeat in their career before success was found. Despite being the neutral take here, it\u2019s possible that maybe all Matthews and McDavid need is just one more year. After all, victory does wash away the stings of defeat.
