{"id":110279,"date":"2021-05-22T14:18:02","date_gmt":"2021-05-22T18:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/?p=110279"},"modified":"2021-05-23T23:41:43","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T03:41:43","slug":"john-tavares-return-maple-leafs-keys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/05\/22\/john-tavares-return-maple-leafs-keys\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Toronto Maple Leafs Move Forward Without John Tavares"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There have been very few instances in playoff history as concerning and downright scary as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tavarjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Tavares<\/a>&#8216; injury Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve received many updates over the past couple of days from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/05\/22\/toronto-maple-leafs-tenure-morgan-rielly\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> organization on Tavares&#8217; health. Firstly, he&#8217;s been cleared of all structural head, neck, and spine injuries. Per Elliotte Friedman, he&#8217;s suffered a concussion and a sprained MCL. He&#8217;ll be out a minimum of two weeks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">TOR GM Kyle Dubas says CT scans and MRIs cleared John Tavares of structural damage to his head, neck and spine. That\u2019s great to hear.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FriedgeHNIC\/status\/1396104713695793154?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 22, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>With the severity of Tavares&#8217; concussion unknown, however, it&#8217;s impossible to determine when he&#8217;d return to the lineup. A best-case scenario, in terms of hockey, is that he returns at the mid-point of the Leafs&#8217; potential second-round playoff series. The real best-case scenario is that his long-term health is paramount, and he makes a full recovery.<\/p>\n<p>All that being said, there&#8217;s still a series to be played. The team already finds themselves down 1-0 against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. We&#8217;ll look here at a few players that will need to step up in order to give the Leafs a chance to Tavares back in the lineup again this season.<\/p>\n<h2>Leafs Keys to a Potential John Tavares Return<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/foligni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Foligno<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>This year&#8217;s trade deadline acquisition is going to be a huge part of a Leafs series win here. Per TSN&#8217;s Mark Masters, he&#8217;ll likely be filling in Tavares&#8217; spot as the team&#8217;s second-line centre.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Lines at Leafs practice<\/p>\n<p>Hyman &#8211; Matthews &#8211; Marner<br \/>\nGalchenyuk &#8211; Foligno &#8211; Nylander<br \/>\nEngvall &#8211; Kerfoot &#8211; Mikheyev<br \/>\nThornton &#8211; Spezza &#8211; Simmonds<\/p>\n<p>With Tavares out:<\/p>\n<p>* Galchenyuk in on 2nd line<br \/>\n* Engvall in on 3rd line; Nash out<br \/>\n* Foligno, Kerfoot at centre <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TSN_Edge?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@TSN_Edge<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mark Masters (@markhmasters) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/markhmasters\/status\/1395772745183596554?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 21, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;ll be shifting to centre after playing wing with Tavares and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nylanwi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Nylander<\/a> in Game 1. Unintentionally or not, Keefe&#8217;s constructed a line where all three players have some experience playing the centre position at the NHL level. It&#8217;s a pretty good strategy in order to compensate as big a loss as Tavares &#8212; if Foligno isn&#8217;t working out down the middle, Nylander or Galchenyuk can shift into that spot instead. Foligno&#8217;s defensive presence will have to be key on this second line. He&#8217;s decent but not great in the faceoff dot with a career percentage of 47.0.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, Foligno can&#8217;t be relied upon for goals. The playmaking on this line will have to stem from the wings in Nylander and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/galchal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Galchenyuk<\/a> &#8212; more on him later. The reality remains is that Tavares is a better offensive player than Foligno is a defensive player. If the Leafs want to break even in net goal differential here, Foligno will need to fully embrace a shutdown centre role while also enabling Nylander and Galchenyuk to generate secondary scoring chances. It&#8217;s a tough balance to create, but that&#8217;s why one acquires a player with Foligno&#8217;s experience.<\/p>\n<h3>Alex Galchenyuk<\/h3>\n<p>Galchenyuk had a strong underlying offensive impact at even strength this season. Galchenyuk&#8217;s 0.133 expected goals for per 60 minutes (RAPM-adjusted), per <a href=\"https:\/\/evolving-hockey.com\/stats\/skater_rapm\/?_inputs_&amp;rapm_sk_info=%22No%22&amp;rapm_sk_type=%22Rates%22&amp;rapm_sk_str=%22EV%22&amp;rapm_sk_toi=%2250%22&amp;rapm_sk_pos=%22All%22&amp;rapm_sk_age2=%2250%22&amp;rapm_sk_span=%22Regular%22&amp;rapm_sk_age1=%2217%22&amp;rapm_sk_players=null&amp;rapm_sk_table=%22Single-Season%22&amp;rapm_sk_range=%22Seasons%22&amp;rapm_sk_group=%22Team%2C%20Season%22&amp;rapm_sk_dft_yr=%22All%22&amp;rapm_sk_team=%22TOR%22\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evolving-Hockey<\/a>, ranked fourth on the team behind only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Auston Matthews<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hymanza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Hyman<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/riellmo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morgan Rielly<\/a>. His playmaking ability, forechecking, and zone entry ability will all be under intense scrutiny as he returns to the lineup. Those skills will be relied upon heavily now.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth mentioning that Galchenyuk&#8217;s shooting percentage is 8.1 percent this season, compared to a career average of 11.9.\u00a0 While some regression to the mean would be nice to see from Galchenyuk, the Leafs can&#8217;t rely on that with them needing to win four out of six to advance. His playmaking skills at even strength will need to be used in concert with William Nylander&#8217;s finishing ability in order for this line to generate offence. Look for Nylander to take more shots and be set up for more scoring chances as the series progresses.<\/p>\n<h3>The Third Line<\/h3>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nashri02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Riley Nash<\/a> being a non-factor in his Leafs debut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/engvapi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre Engvall<\/a>&#8216;s drawn back in to serve on a line with Alex Kerfoot and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mikheil01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ilya Mikheyev<\/a>. At even strength this season, the Engvall-Kerfoot-Mikheyev line was extremely responsible despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalstattrick.com\/linestats.php?fromseason=20202021&amp;thruseason=20202021&amp;stype=2&amp;sit=5v5&amp;score=all&amp;rate=n&amp;team=TOR&amp;vteam=ALL&amp;view=wowy&amp;loc=B&amp;gpfilt=none&amp;fd=2021-01-13&amp;td=2021-05-19&amp;tgp=2000&amp;strict=incl&amp;p1=8478115&amp;p2=8477021&amp;p3=8481624&amp;p4=0&amp;p5=0\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">catastrophically low 0.926 PDO<\/a>. Per Natural Stat Trick, the line stayed above average in multiple possession metrics, including a 52.45 Corsi for percentage, a 52.86 percent share of shots, a 52.91 percent expected goals share, and 52 percent of scoring chances.<\/p>\n<p>Without John Tavares, and without a Montreal attack that&#8217;s a huge offensive threat, it might benefit the Leafs to make this a low-event series moving forward. The team&#8217;s improved drastically at preventing high-quality chances against. Toronto has better finishing ability throughout their lineup, even without Tavares in the mix.<\/p>\n<p>It might be more of a dogfight than most expected, but there are still many reasons for optimism here.
