With free agency dragging on, the question became whether or not he will be able to compete with the young talent NHL teams are currently foaming at the mouth for.

Stalberg had run with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2011-12 earning a career best 43 points. The UVM graduate got drafted in the 6th round (161st overall) in the 2006 NHL draft. Stalberg was acquired, along with Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis, by the Blackhawks from Toronto in exchange for Kris Versteeg in 2010. He was able to hoist the Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2012-13 before becoming an unrestricted free agent. Stalberg later agreed to a four-year, $12 million contract with the Nashville Predators.

Bouncing from Nashville to the Rangers, the Hurricanes and finally landing in Ottawa, Stalberg was less than impressive. In the Senators’ Stanley Cup run this last year he finished with no goals. He earned only two assists in 17 games, and a -8 rating. Stalberg leaves Ottawa with just two goals and two assists in 18 regular season games.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

NEW YORK, NY – MAY 02: Viktor Stalberg #24 of the Ottawa Senators skates against the New York Rangers in Game Three of the Eastern Conference Second Round during the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at Madison Square Garden on May 2, 2017 in New York City.
