Asking him to play top pairing minutes though would be too much since he’s just not that kind of defenseman. He’s a fluid skater and has a lot of great offensive ability including a rocket of a slap shot. In 53 games last season for Pittsburgh, he had six goals and 22 points and also has six points in the playoffs before he suffered a broken ankle.

This year Daley’s totals fell to just 19 points but his biggest drop came possession wise when his CF% dropped to 46.1; after being 53.7 last season. This is partially due to the numerous injuries on the Penguins blueline, and the tougher role asked of Daley. Still, buyer beware. If the trend continues it’s like Daley will be more of a burden than a boost.

Pittsburgh wasn’t able to sign him because they have a few restricted free agents to sign such as Justin Schultz and signing Daley to this kind of contract could’ve hurt them financially down the road. Daley should be a great fit, as he looks to hopefully chase another Stanley Cup.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

Defenseman Trevor Daley signs a deal with the Detroit Red Wings after being with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the last couple seasons.
