We’ve finally made it a whole year in hockey history. We at the Last Word on Hockey have given you an entire year’s worth of history by looking at each date\u2019s historical significance<\/a> to the game. Don’t worry because we’ll still check in every now and again to fill in anything we’ve missed. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for March 13th, featuring Phil Housley<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Phil Housley Gets Top U.S. Scorer Mark<\/h3>\n

1999:<\/strong> The Calgary Flames defenceman hands out three assists in a 5-4 overtime win over the Washington Capitals.<\/a> Housley passes Joe Mullen<\/a> to get to 1,066 career points, which is three better than Mullen’s career total.<\/p>\n

The Saint Paul,Minn. native finishes his career with 1,232 points and enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015. Mike Modano<\/a> would break Housley’s record by an American in Nov. 2007.<\/p>\n

On the same night, Ray Bourque<\/a><\/span> passes John Bucyk<\/a> as the Boston Bruins’<\/a> all-time leader in games played in a 3-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.<\/a><\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1938:<\/strong> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> forward Carl Liscombe<\/a> scores the fastest hat trick in league history in a 5-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. Liscombe scores three goals in 1:52 and holds the record until Chicago’s Bill Mosienko<\/a><\/span> scores three times in 21 seconds in 1952, still an NHL record.<\/p>\n

1954:<\/strong> Camille Henry<\/a><\/span> of the New York Rangers<\/a> scores a record four power-play goals in one game in a 5-2 win over Detroit.<\/p>\n

1966:<\/strong> Blackhawks goalie Glenn Hall<\/a> is the second goalie to have six 30-win seasons. He makes 29 saves in a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.<\/a><\/p>\n

1971:<\/strong> Bucyk becomes the fifth player to 100 points in a season to join teammates Bobby Orr<\/a> and Phil Esposito<\/a> in reaching the mark. He gets to the century mark with a goal in a 6-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

1976:<\/strong> Chicago coach Billy Reay<\/a> becomes the winningest bench boss with onw team after getting 501 victories. He gets to the mark in a 4-1 win over the Minnesota North Stars.<\/a><\/p>\n

1984:<\/strong> Edmonton Oilers<\/a> star Wayne Gretzky<\/a> gets his 900th point in just 385 games. He has a goal and an assist in a 6-5 win over the Quebec Nordiques.<\/a><\/p>\n

2001:<\/strong> Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> Mark Recchi<\/a> becomes the 60th player to reach 1,000 career points. Recchi scores in the first period of a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Blues.<\/a><\/p>\n

2003: <\/b>Ron Francis<\/a><\/span> of the Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> joins Gordie Howe<\/a><\/span> as the only players in NHL history to have at least 50 points in 22 consecutive seasons.<\/p>\n

2019:<\/strong> Oilers captain Connor McDavid<\/a> has three assists in a 6-3 loss to the New Jersey Devils<\/a> get his third straight 100-point season.<\/p>\n
