We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for March 8th, featuring the passing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/morenho01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howie Morenz<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Habs Howie Morenz Passes Away in 1936<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1936:<\/strong> The Montreal forward dies from a blood clot unrelated to his career-ending broken leg from six weeks prior. Morenz is hospitalized after breaking four bones in his left leg and ankle in a game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> on Jan. 28.<\/p>\n<p>[pickup_prop id=&#8221;4179&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s told that he&#8217;ll never play hockey again and passes shortly after. Over 200,000 people line the streets of Montreal for his funeral procession. Morenz finishes his career with 271 goals and 201 assists for 478 points.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1945:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howesy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Syd Howe<\/a> passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stewane01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nels Stewart<\/a> to become the league&#8217; all-time top scorer. Howe picks up an assist for his 516th point in a 7-3 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1953:<\/strong> Detroit becomes the first team to win five regular season titles in a row when they beat the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\"> Toronto Maple Leafs,<\/a> 3-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\"> Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stackro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Stackhouse<\/a> becomes the fourth blueliner to get six assists in one game. Stackhouse joins <span id=\"token-B5F3ED8C0710743AE54B7\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/prattba01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Babe Pratt<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-2A2CD3C573EE0168CBDB2\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/staplpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Stapleton<\/a><\/span> and <span id=\"token-E8150367ED46D66A5DEA2\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a> in getting six assists after an 8-2 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1977:<\/strong> Orr announces he won&#8217;t play the rest of the season due to knee issues. The Chicago defenceman finishes with four goals and 19 assists in his first year with team. He returns next season, but only plays six games and the retires.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1978:<\/strong> Montreal forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laflegu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lafleur<\/a> scores 50 goals for the fourth straight season after getting a pair in a 4-3 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1983:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bourqra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Bourque<\/a> joins Orr as the only<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\"> Boston Bruins <\/a>defencemen to get hat tricks. Bourque scores the only hat trick of his career in an 11-5 road win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Quebec Nordiques.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a> scores his 39th and final hat trick in a 6-5 win at Chicago. Bossy gets the 100th hat trick in team history, but retires at 30 due to back issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hawerda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dale Hawerchuk<\/a> becomes the 31st player to get 1,000 career points. He gets a power-play goal in a 5-3 loss to Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> Pittsburgh great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a> gets 100 points for the 10th time in his career.
