The news was announced in the run-up to the Sharks Saturday night game against the Vegas Golden Knights. His injury news came as a surprise with no indication until warm-ups that he would not be playing.

San Jose faced the Vegas Golden Knights in a back-to-back series this weekend. Both sides played in a highly entertaining game on Friday in which the Sharks stole a point late on. The game-tying goal resulted from a goaltending blunder from Vegas’ third-choice Oscar Dansk. However, the Golden Knights won the contest in overtime on a Max Pacioretty goal. Vegas completed the series sweep on Saturday, beating San Jose, 4-0.

This season, Meier has contributed well to a struggling Sharks outfit. He has four goals and 15 points in 21 games. That tracks a similar pace to his 49 points in 70 games last season. Although, Meier’s best year was in 2018-19 where he potted 30 goals.

The Sharks are 8-11-3 and rank seventh in the West Division on points percentage. Their biggest issue this season remains consistency as the team is constantly guilty of giving up big leads and finding different ways to lose hockey games. San Jose has lost five of its last six games.

[pickup_prop id=”4493″]

What This Means Going Forward

As a result of the injury, the Sharks called up Noah Gregor from the taxi squad, who slotted onto the third line alongside Patrick Marleau and Ryan Donato. Gregor is a fourth-round pick from the 2016 draft and has played 42 career NHL games, scoring six times.

San Jose is missing a few players besides Meier, including Marcus Sorensen (COVID protocol) and Joachim Blichfeld. The latter was suspended for two games for a check to the head on Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon.

Meier’s absence will be felt given that he is on a bit of a hot streak. The 24-year-old has eight points in his last five games. He ranks third among Sharks skaters in scoring.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

San Jose Sharks forward Timo Meier is considered day-to-day after suffering a lower-body injury.
