However, we\u2019re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/today-in-hockey-history\/\" target=\"_self\">each date\u2019s historical significance<\/a> to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for February 22nd, featuring the Miracle on Ice.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Team USA Makes Miracle on Ice<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1980:<\/strong> The United States men&#8217;s hockey team stuns the world with a 4-3 win over the vaunted Soviet Union in the medal round at Lake Placid, N.Y. Few gave the Americans any chance of winning due to their age and inexperience. The Soviets had beaten the U.S., 10-3, in a pre-Olympic exhibition game.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ql9I2NScwSI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsma02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Johnson<\/a> scored twice and Mike Eruzione got the game-winner with 10 minutes left. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/craigji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Craig<\/a> stood tall in goal to give the U.S. the improbable win. The Americans would finish the job and win gold by beating Finland two days later.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1928:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/keatsdu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duke Keats<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> scores 15:50 into the second period to end <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/conneal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alec Connell<\/a>&#8216;s shutout streak. He scores in a 5-3 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a> gets his 10th hat trick of the season. He ties his own record from 1981-82 with four goals in a 9-2 rout of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hasekdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominik Hasek<\/a> made 20 saves and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=svobope01,svobope02&amp;search=Petr+Svoboda&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Petr Svoboda<\/a> scored the only goal as the Czech Republic beat Russia, 1-0, in the Olympic gold medal game. It&#8217;s the first Olympic tournament to have NHL players in history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> The United States women&#8217;s hockey team beats Canada, 3-2, in a shootout. Twin sisters Monique and Jocelyn Lamoureux helped the Americans by getting the tying goal and shootout winner, respectively.
