Phil Esposito Bets 50th Goals in His Birthday Three Times<\/h3>\n

1971:<\/strong> The Boston Bruins forward joins Maurice Richard<\/a><\/span>, Bobby Hull<\/a><\/span> and Bernie Geoffrion<\/a> as 50-goal scorers in a season. He gets to 50 in a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.<\/span><\/p>\n

1972:<\/strong> Esposito celebrates his 30th birthday with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. He started his career in Chicago before Boston acquired him.<\/p>\n

1974:<\/strong> He becomes the first three-time 50-goal scorer with a hat trick in a 5-5 tie with the Minnesota North Stars.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1930:<\/strong> Montreal Maroons goalie Clint Benedict<\/a> becomes the first goalie to wear a mask after getting hit in the face with a puck. The Maroons and the Americans skate to a 3-3 tie.<\/p>\n

1944:<\/strong> The Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs play a “perfect game” in a 0-0 tie with no penalties called. Chicago’s Mike Karakas<\/a> and Toronto’s Paul Bibeault<\/a> do not allow a goal while referee Bill Chadwick doesn’t call a penalty.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1971:<\/strong> The Montreal Canadiens Jean Beliveau<\/a> becomes the first to record 1,200 points in a 7-1 rout of Chicago. Beliveau hands out three assists while Peter Mahovlich<\/span> scores twice in five seconds.<\/p>\n

1981: <\/b>Rookies Peter Stastny<\/a><\/span> and Anton Stastny<\/a><\/span> each has a hat trick<\/span> to lead the Quebec Nordiques to a 9-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. The brothers also add three assists for a six-point night.<\/p>\n

1982:<\/strong> The New York Islanders get their 15th straight win with a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. John Tonelli<\/a> breaks a tie in the third period to give the Isles the record-setting victory.<\/p>\n

2016: <\/b>Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr<\/a><\/span> scores twice in a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets. He moves past Brett Hull<\/a> on the all-time scoring list with his 742nd career tally.<\/span><\/p>\n

2018:<\/strong> The Colorado Avalanche net all five of their goals on the power-play in a 5-4 overtime win against the Canucks. Tyson Barrie<\/a> gets a goal and four assists while Nathan MacKinnon<\/a> nets the game-winner at 3:36 of OT.<\/p>\n

2019: <\/b> Johnny Gaudreau<\/a> of the Calgary Flames and MacKinnon both score in wins to bring the number of 30-goal scorers for the 2018-19 season to 16.<\/p>\n
