We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for February 18th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Wayne Gretzky Scores Five Goals in a Game<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> The Edmonton Oilers centre nets his first five-goal game of his career in a 9-2 rout of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>. Gretzky even scores four goals in less than eight minutes in the third period.<\/p>\n<p>[pickup_prop id=&#8221;4234&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the first of four five-goal games in his NHL career. He becomes the first player to score at least three goals in a game five times before the age of 21.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1918:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vezinge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Georges Vezina<\/a> earns the first shutout in NHL history. He backstops Montreal to a 9-0 win over Toronto in the league&#8217;s third month of play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1926:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/conneal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alec Connell<\/a> gets his sixth straight shutout with a 1-0 win over the Habs. It&#8217;s Connell&#8217;s 12th shutout of the season and the 47th of his NHL career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1968:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> christen the &#8220;new&#8221; Madison Square Garden with a 3-1 win over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\"> Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>. Philadelphia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hickswa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Hicks<\/a> gets the first goal, but tallies by <span id=\"token-3DD2B2A71B8BF856BC3A3\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nevinbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bob Nevin<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-EA178A808F843ECC021AD\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Donnie Marshall<\/span> and <span id=\"token-DE1E4E1999C1BD0CAB6AD\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kurteor01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orland Kurtenbach<\/a><\/span> lead New York to victory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> defender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a> gets his 22nd goal of the season in a 5-5 tie with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. Orr breaks his own record for most goals by a defenceman en route to finishing with 33 goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bourqra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Bourque<\/a> finishes with a career-high six points in a 7-2 road win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>. Bourque gets five assists as he becomes the seventh blueliner to get 600 assists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coffepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Coffey<\/a> becomes the first defender to get 1,100 assists. Coffey gets the milestone in a 2-2 tie with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gerbema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Gerber<\/a> stops all 49 shots as Switzerland upsets Canada, 2-0, in the group stages at the 2006 Winter Olympics. It&#8217;s the first victory by the Swiss over Canada in the Olympic play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kucheni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikita Kucherov<\/a> hits 99 points for the season in a five-point night.
