He played 247 games for Ottawa between 2015-2019 and scored 62 goals and 64 assists for 126 points. In his last two seasons with them, he scored over 20 goals both years. The Senators traded Dzingel along with a seventh-round pick during the 2019 trade deadline to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Anthony Duclair and a second-round pick in 2020 and 2021.

Since leaving Ottawa, Dzingel played in 91 games for the Blue Jackets and Hurricanes. He’s scored 14 goals and 45 points. This year he’s scored four points in 11 games.

Going to Carolina is Alex Galchenyuk and Cedric Paquette. Carolina will be Galchenyuk’s sixth team since the 2017-18 season. He scored 41 points in 2018-19, 24 points last year, and has one goal in eight games with Ottawa. Paquette was traded to Ottawa two months ago along with Braydon Coburn from the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has scored one goal in nine games.

What This Means for the Future

The Senators are playing strong hockey recently. In their last four games, they have recorded 36 shots on average but have only scored more than one goal once. Their lack of finish is one of the reasons they keep losing even though they are playing well. Dzingel has been a strong goal scorer for the Senators in the past. They are hoping he can bring that back. However, he played under Guy Boucher and had players such as Matt Duchene, Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman, Kyle Turris and Derick Brassard around to help him. He will be under a new coaching staff and almost an entirely different team. It’s not a guarantee he will have success.

Dzingel is now the only active Ottawa Senator who played in Game 7 of the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals.

The Senators gave up Paquette who has been a healthy scratch during this four-game run. They also gave up Galchenyuk, who has been playing well but can’t bury goals. Carolina is hoping that Paquette can give them some solid depth and Stanley Cup experience since they are a Cup contender this year. Galchenyuk can give them some depth scoring.

Dzingel and Galchenyuk are in similar situations in their careers. Both are skilled goal scorers who have had success earlier in their careers but have struggled over the past two seasons. Both Ottawa and Carolina are hoping that this change brings out the best in both of them.

Canada has tougher quarantine rules than the United States. Therefore, Galchenyuk and Paquette will more than likely suit up for the Hurricanes before Dzingel can for Ottawa. The Senators will have to wait two weeks once Dzingel lands in the country.

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

The Carolina Hurricanes trade Ryan Dzingel to the Ottawa Senators for Cedric Paquette and Alex Galchenyuk.
