Hockey is back! Normally we\u2019d be closing in on the NHL trade deadline for the final push of the season. However, we\u2019re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance<\/a> to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for February 11th featuring Sidney Crosby<\/a>.

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Sidney Crosby Gets 400th Goal<\/h3>\n

2018:<\/strong> The Pittsburgh Penguins captain becomes the 95th player in league history reach 400 career goals. He reaches the milestone with his first in a two-goal game against the St. Louis Blues. Crosby also manages to snap a 10-game goalless drought in the 4-1 victory.<\/p>\n

The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native also becomes the 20th player to get 400 goals and 650 assists. Crosby gets 401 with an empty-netter to seal the win.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1950:<\/strong> Detroit Red Wings forward Gordie Howe<\/a> gets first career hat trick in a 9-4 win over the Boston Bruins. Gerry Couture<\/a> outshines Howe with a four-goal performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

1960: <\/b>Boston’s Bronco Horvath<\/a> continues his record 21-game point streak with an assist on John Bucyk<\/a>‘s first period goal. The Bruins top the Red Wings, 3-2.

1971:<\/strong> Montreal Canadiens great Jean Beliveau<\/a> scores his 500th career goal in a 6-2 win over the Minnesota North Stars. It caps Beliveau’s 18th and final hat trick of his stories career.<\/p>\n

1968:<\/strong> The New York Rangers rally for a 3-3 tie with Detroit in the last game at the old Madison Square Garden. Rod Gilbert<\/a> assists on all three Rangers goals.<\/p>\n

1982:<\/strong> Referee Kerry Fraser makes history giving two Vancouver Canucks players penalty shots in the same period. Thomas Gradin<\/a><\/span> and Ivan Hlinka<\/a> each scores in the Canucks’ 4-4 tie with the Red Wings.<\/span><\/p>\n

1984:<\/strong> New York Islanders coach Al Arbour<\/a> gets his 500th coaching win in a 6-4 win over Vancouver.<\/p>\n

1988:<\/strong> Edmonton Oilers centre Wayne Gretzky<\/a> gets his record eighth 100-point season in a 7-2 victory over Vancouver. Gretzky gets a goal and two assists to reach 101 points.<\/p>\n

1991:<\/strong> Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux<\/a> becomes the second-fastest player to 500 points with a pair of assists. Lemieux does it in 433 games with Gretzky gets there in 352. However, the Oilers top the Penguins, 7-5.<\/p>\n

2000:<\/b> Ray Bourque<\/a><\/span> becomes the second defenseman in NHL history to reach 1,500 points<\/span> when he scores a goal for the Bruins in a 5-2 loss to the Rangers<\/p>\n

2011:<\/strong> The Islanders top the Penguins, 9-3, at home, but it was fight night between the clubs. In all, 65 penalties were assessed, including 15 fighting majors and 21 game misconducts, resulting in a total of 346 penalty minutes.<\/p>\n
