We’re normally starting up another hockey season, but we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. Today in Hockey History

Red Berenson Bags Six Goals

1968: The St. Louis Blues centre scores six goals in an 8-0 rout of the Philadelphia Flyers. Berenson gets a goal in the first period, four in the second period and one more in the third period. The “Red Baron” gets the first six-goal game since the Detroit Red Wings Syd Howe did so in 1944.

He retires after the 1977-78 season after scoring 261 career goals and 658 points. The Regina, Saskatchewan native becomes a legendary head coach at the University of Michigan in 1984 and coaches for 33 seasons.

Other Notable Events

1962: Chicago Black Hawks goalie Glenn Hall leaves with a back injury after making his 502nd straight start in net. Denis DeJordy comes on relief and the Blackhawks tie the Boston Bruins, 3-3.

1968: Gordie Howe gets his 1,600th career point on an assist in Detroit’s 5-2 win over the Minnesota North Stars.

1975: The New York Rangers and Boston pull off a blockbuster deal involving three future Hockey Hall of Famers. Boston gets Brad Park and Jean Ratelle while New York receives Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais. Both Park and Esposito are reviled at the time in their new cities. However, both would endear themselves to their new fan bases. Esposito would score two goals just 12 hours later in a 7-5 loss to the California Golden Seals in Oakland. Park and Ratelle help Boston make the Stanley Cup Final in 1977 and 1978 while Esposito does the same with the Rangers in 1979.

1981: John Van Boxmeer‘s natural hat trick and two assists lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 6-2 victory over the New York Islanders. He sets a Sabres-record for most points by a defenceman.

2002: The Rangers Brian Leetch is the first defenceman to score seven overtime regular-season goals in league history. Leetch scores 51 seconds into the Blueshirts 1-0 win over the Calgary Flames.

2007: Mike Modano scores two goals in just four minutes in the Dallas Stars 3-1 victory against the San Jose Sharks. Modano passes Phil Housley to become the highest-scoring United States-born player in NHL history.

2017: Roberto Luongo of the Florida Panthers makes his 972nd regular-season appearance in a 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. He moves past Terry Sawchuk into third place on the all-time list among NHL goalies.
