The world No. 1 looked in complete control from start to finish, showing everyone why he remains one of the players to beat in this tournament.

Scheffler’s strong start came just days after he finished tied for fourth at The Open Championship. Although he came up short in his bid to defend the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale, he stayed in contention all week despite struggling on the greens.

Instead of taking time off after the final major of the season, Scheffler headed straight to Minnesota for his first appearance at the 3M Open. His goal was simple: keep his game sharp before the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Scheffler’s Putter Comes Back To Life

Scheffler’s biggest improvement came with the putter. Putting had been the weakest part of his game over the previous two weeks, first at the Genesis Scottish Open and then at The Open Championship. Even so, he still managed a top-four finish at Royal Birkdale thanks to his outstanding ball-striking.

However, everything changed on Thursday when he made six birdies, 12 pars, and did not record a single bogey. He rolled in more than 134 feet of putts and gained more than three strokes on the field with the flat stick, marking one of his best putting performances of the season.

ALSO READ: Biggest Winners and Losers From the 2026 Open Championship

The sharp display immediately moved him into a share of second place, just one shot behind clubhouse leader Emiliano Grillo, who opened with a 7-under-par 64. Kevin Roy, Lucas Glover and Michael Brennan also carded rounds of 65 to join Scheffler near the top of the leaderboard.

World No. 1 Looks Ready For Another Title Run

Scheffler arrived in Minnesota after a busy stretch that included two tournaments in the United Kingdom. He missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open, ending a remarkable streak that had lasted since 2022. However, he bounced back at The Open Championship, finishing tied for fourth despite never finding his best form on the greens.

His opening round at the 3M Open showed that those putting struggles may already be behind him. Scheffler has won one official PGA Tour event this season, The American Express, in January, but he has continued to produce top finishes almost every time he tees it up. That consistency has kept him comfortably at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

With many of the world’s top players skipping this week’s tournament, Scheffler entered as the clear favorite. Based on his opening-round performance, he looks well positioned to justify that status.

Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images

Scottie Scheffler has picked up right where he left off, opening the 2026 3M Open with a brilliant bogey-free 6-under-par 65 to move into a share of the lead at TPC Twin Cities.
