That could allow McIlroy to keep his membership benefits despite playing one fewer event.

New PGA Tour Plans Raise Fresh Questions

McIlroy’s comments come as the PGA Tour prepares to introduce a new two-tier competition structure in 2028. The new format will include a top-level Championship Series alongside a second-tier Challenger Series, with both schedules running at the same time.

ALSO READ: PGA Tour Players Who Benefit Most From the Tours New Rule Changes

Players in the Championship Series will not be allowed to compete in Challenger events. However, golfers who win two Challenger tournaments in one season will earn immediate promotion to the top level. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp’s proposal also includes Championship events with fields of about 120 players competing for prize funds of at least $20 million.

McIlroy has also warned the PGA Tour to be careful about how the new system affects the Genesis Scottish Open. The event has been co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour since 2022, allowing eligible members from both tours to compete.

ALSO READ: Why The Renaissance Club Is Considered the Ultimate Final Test Before The Open

This week, 14 of the world’s top 20 players are in the field at The Renaissance Club. Under the proposed changes, many of those stars could become ineligible to play in the Scottish Open because it is not expected to receive Championship Series status. McIlroy believes the tournament has become one of the strongest events outside the major championships and hopes it will maintain its place on the schedule.

Main Photo Credit: © Adam Cairns-Imagn Images

Rory McIlroy has said he is not worried about falling short of the PGA Tour’s minimum event requirement this season, revealing that he has already discussed the situation with CEO Brian Rolapp. The Northern Irish star is expected to play 14 PGA Tour events in 2026, one fewer than the 15 tournaments normally required to […]

[15,246,19
8122,8143,34
post-438393","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-golf","category-golf-news","category-pga","tag-brian-rolapp","tag-genesis-scottish-open","tag-rory-mcilroy
["GET
