The Renaissance Club has become one of the most important events on the golf calendar. Since 2019, it has hosted the Genesis Scottish Open and has given players one final chance to prepare before The Open Championship.<\/p>\n

Its challenging design, strong field, and links-style conditions have helped make The Renaissance Club the perfect warm-up for The Open.<\/p>\n

A Modern Course Built for Championship Golf<\/h3>\n

The Renaissance Club sits between the villages of Dirleton and Gullane in North Berwick, about 20 miles east of Edinburgh. It is surrounded by some of Scotland’s most famous golf courses, including Muirfield, Gullane, Archerfield, and North Berwick Golf Club.<\/p>\n

Although it looks like a traditional links course, it is relatively new. Wealthy American Jerry Savardi founded the club in 2008 after buying land along Scotland’s famous Golf Coast. He hired renowned golf course architect Tom Doak to build a course capable of hosting major tournaments. Three-time major champion P\u00e1draig Harrington also helped during the design process as a player consultant.<\/p>\n

The course faced drainage problems in its early years, but those issues have largely been solved. Today, it continues to earn praise as one of the best modern championship venues in the world.<\/p>\n

A Tough Test Before The Open<\/h3>\n

The Renaissance Club is different from many traditional links courses. Players cannot rely only on low-running shots because the course features elevated greens that reward accurate approach play through the air. Its rolling fairways, thick rough, and coastal winds also place a premium on accuracy from the tee and strong ball-striking throughout the round.<\/p>\n

For the Genesis Scottish Open, the course plays as a par 70 measuring just under 7,300 yards. It features five par 3s and three par 5s, creating a layout that demands smart course management. The closing holes are especially demanding, testing both a player’s skill and composure before they head into The Open the following week.<\/p>\n

The course has also produced some remarkable scoring. Bernd Wiesberger became the first player to shoot a course record 61 in 2019. Cameron Tringale, Byeong Hun An, Richard Mansell, and Chris Gotterup have since matched that score.<\/p>\n

The strength of the field and the course’s demanding layout have made the Genesis Scottish Open one of the biggest events outside the major championships. For many players, a strong performance at The Renaissance Club is the perfect sign that they are ready for The Open.<\/p>\n
