With the Tour CEO, Brian Rolapp, recently being appointed, he has taken the chance to revamp the environment. Following earlier changes to the rules, Rolapp has now announced a new competitive system starting in 2028. Since his addition, Rolapp has vowed to keep the Tour filled with the \u201cbest players in the world\u201d. This new competitive structure of play will be seen through the Tour Championship Series and the Tour Challenger Series. The new model of play will offer greater competitiveness throughout tournament days, top event locations, and a better fan experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Change Is For The Better\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rolapp has spent time within the NFL as the previous chief media and business officer, increasing the entertainment value in his time. Now in the world of golf, he has taken that same initiative to make the Tour more exciting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom day one, the focus of the Future Competition Committee has been to build the best version of the PGA TOUR, and to do so in a way that reflects the voice of our players and the expectations of our fans,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgatour.com\/article\/news\/latest\/2026\/06\/23\/pga-tour-new-competitive-structure-two-series-model-2028-schedule-changes-announcement-championship-challenger-series-track-brian-rolapp\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Rolapp. \u201cThe result is a new competitive model grounded in meritocracy, with clearer pathways, higher stakes, and more consistency when the best players compete together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PGA Tour Championship Series will kick things off, offering a more consistent schedule of play. Estimating between a possible 23-24 events, the season would run from February to August. Rolapp and the Tour have already lined up 10 expected regular-season events, with all future tournaments holding a purse of at least $20 million. Each regular season event will feature 72 holes with a 36-hole cut for the top 65 and ties, with consideration for special formats being pro-am. The PGA TOUR Championship Series will also feature a postseason of play, adding that deepened sense of competitive nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side of the play will be the Challenger Series, which is the main road to the Championship Series play. This will offer 20 events with purses of at least $4 million in earnings, also offering possible promotions. The tournaments will be hosted at venues around the world that have been hosts of Tour events before. Challenger Series tournaments will be played concurrently with the Championship Series and will display the top 144 players, also having the ability to reduce field sizes due to elements like daylight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis model positions the PGA TOUR for the future,\u201d Rolapp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgatour.com\/article\/news\/latest\/2026\/06\/23\/pga-tour-new-competitive-structure-two-series-model-2028-schedule-changes-announcement-championship-challenger-series-track-brian-rolapp\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said.<\/a> \u201cOur focus now shifts to finalizing the details and preparing for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implementation in 2028.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Brian Rolapp Taking Initiative<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a lot of change can come <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/trouble-in-paradise-for-mickelson\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">confusion<\/a>, yet Rolapp is setting a precedent for the years to come. Putting on display the many ways the PGA Tour can strengthen as a company, while also giving hundreds of players opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key to how the two series work together will be the opportunity for further promotion and relegation. The top 90 who finish will be fully exempt for the following season, with those who fail to retain membership still at risk for the PGA TOUR Challenger Series.
