{"id":438133,"date":"2026-04-26T20:30:56","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T20:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=438133"},"modified":"2026-04-26T20:30:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T20:30:56","slug":"rory-mcilroy-skipping-cadillac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/rory-mcilroy-skipping-cadillac\/","title":{"rendered":"Rory McIlroy Skipping Cadillac"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just around the corner, the Cadillac Championship is set to be the next signature event on the PGA Tour\u2019s schedule.\u00a0 It comes with all the usual stuff expected of a signature event: a larger purse, a shorter run time, and some of the best players competing.\u00a0 However, Rory McIlroy is sitting this one out and continues his break after winning his s<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/the-masters-rory-mcllroy-back-to-back\/\" target=\"_self\">econd straight Masters Tournament<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rory McIlroy And Signature Events<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans often point out how strange it is for McIlroy to skip something like a Signature, mainly because he was one of the biggest supporters of their creation.\u00a0 They were created as a response to LIV Golf coming onto the scene and disrupting the whole sport.\u00a0 Rory McIlroy even commented on how well the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/signature-event-model-is-working-according-to-rory-mcilroy\/\" target=\"_self\">Signature Events were working<\/a> for the players and the Tour.\u00a0 With McIlroy\u2019s strong support for the program, it rubs fans and players the wrong way when he doesn\u2019t attend.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fan And Player Reaction<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reactions to McIlroy skipping the Cadillac Championship are mixed.\u00a0 Starting on the player side of the debate, Michael S. Kim made a snarky comment <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Mike_kim714\/status\/2047811807012647083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">about it on his Twitter account<\/a> with the following tweet:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I hope to get to a point where I decide to skip a signature event even when healthy,&#8221; Kim wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A little bit of jealousy towards McIlroy and the success he\u2019s had in the sport, but also respects his skill and achievements.\u00a0 On the fan side of things, opinions are split.\u00a0 One fan wasn\u2019t too sympathetic, writing the following about McIlroy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSelf-designated \u2018ambassador of golf\u2019 and \u2018face of the PGA\u2019 nowadays just skips playing the PGA Tour and just plays the majors and money grab DP World tour events in the Middle East. Great golfer, but I can\u2019t stand him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another fan is much more sympathetic towards McIlroy, pointing out that he just made a big accomplishment in his life, and some time off is well deserved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGolf fans are so soft. Dude just won the Masters and is in his late 30s. Maybe he wants to relax w\/family in friends.
