{"id":438071,"date":"2026-04-17T00:47:03","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T00:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=438071"},"modified":"2026-04-17T00:47:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T00:47:03","slug":"liv-golf-seeing-the-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/liv-golf-seeing-the-end\/","title":{"rendered":"LIV Golf Seeing The End?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, among <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/pga-tour-and-liv-golf-merger-looks-dead\/\" target=\"_self\">the merger talks<\/a>, there was speculation about the future of LIV Golf.\u00a0 There were many rumors about players who were on the verge of leaving the league.\u00a0 Throughout the year, there were even a couple of former<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/laurie-canter-earns-pga-tour-card\/\" target=\"_self\"> LIV players who earned a PGA Tour Card<\/a>.\u00a0 However, today rumors are abound that LIV Golf is on borrowed time as the 2026 season continues, and the factors going into it are far beyond the league&#8217;s control.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Would LIV Golf Shut Down?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main concern is financial.\u00a0 LIV Golf is still very new, and it has yet to make a profit.\u00a0 The league is currently running at a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/liv-golf-spending-nearing-five-billion-dollars\/\" target=\"_self\">deficit of $5 billion<\/a>.\u00a0 This is in large part due to its spending habits towards big events, big venues, and big names.\u00a0 The first wave of players coming over from the PGA have been given some very generous contracts, to say the least.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For LIV Golf, money has not been a problem, in large part due to the Saudi Arabia PIF.\u00a0 The country&#8217;s economy is based on the export of oil.\u00a0 Something that the whole world is always willing to buy for better or for worse.\u00a0 So long as the oil flows, so too will the money.\u00a0 That is, until the water routes are blocked.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously, the war in Iran had already spilled into the surrounding countries.\u00a0 When it broke out, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/liv-golf-players-seeing-delays-due-to-iran-strikes\/\" target=\"_self\">eight LIV players were stranded<\/a> in the Middle East when the airports were forced to shut down.\u00a0 Now the Strait of Hormuz, the main waterway used for trade in the area, is being blockaded.\u00a0 The flow of revenue for Saudi Arabia is cut off until the blockade lifts.\u00a0 This means that for the long-term financial health of the country, cuts have to be made.\u00a0 The speculation is that LIV Golf is one of the first on that chopping block.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIV Golf Denying Rumors<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rumors came up due to an emergency meeting being called for Thursday, April 16th.\u00a0 The CEO of LIV, Scott O\u2019Neil, sent out an email ahead of this meeting to try to alleviate the concerns anyone has over the future of the league.\u00a0 It has done little to douse any fires sparked, yet <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/golf\/news\/liv-golf-shut-down-saudi-arabia-pif-pga-tour-bryson-dechambeau\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O\u2019Neil wrote the following<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I want to be crystal clear: Our season continues exactly as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle,&#8221; O&#8217;Neil wrote in the email. &#8220;While the media landscape is often filled with speculation, our reality is defined by the work we do on the grass.
