{"id":438063,"date":"2026-04-14T23:49:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T23:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=438063"},"modified":"2026-04-14T23:49:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T23:49:41","slug":"jack-nicklaus-is-throwing-his-support-behind-the-rollback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/jack-nicklaus-is-throwing-his-support-behind-the-rollback\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Nicklaus Is Throwing His Support Behind The Rollback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/the-masters-rory-mcllroy-back-to-back\/\" target=\"_self\"> Masters Tournament<\/a>, the debate about the golf ball rollback has come back up.\u00a0 The Augusta National has put its support behind a measure to limit the length a player can go.\u00a0 It is being seen as a necessary measure for the sport.\u00a0 However, Jack Nicklaus believes that the rollback isn\u2019t going far enough for what the goal is.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golf Ball Rollback And Its Concerns<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The golf ball rollback\u2019s main concern is that, as equipment improves, players are driving balls clear across the field with no problem and leaving the fairway irrelevant.\u00a0 A short-term and expensive solution has been to redesign the courses to force players to be more considerate of how hard they swing.\u00a0 Despite being in the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/nicklaus-companies-goes-bankrupt-after-losing-court-case-to-jack-nicklaus\/\" target=\"_self\"> business of designing golf courses<\/a>, Jack Nicklaus sees the rollback as a necessary step for the long-term future of the sport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Nicklaus Weighs In<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, during the Masters, Jack Nicklaus gave his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/opinions-on-golf-ball-rollback-in-2025\/\" target=\"_self\">opinion on the rollback<\/a>.\u00a0 He has his own course design business, and he has been playing since the 1960s.\u00a0 During his time with the sport, he saw distances jump by at least 50 yards between 1995 and 2005.\u00a0 Compared with previous increases that would have been around 5 yards between 1930 and 1995.\u00a0 Talking about that increase, Nicklaus then stated that he doesn\u2019t see this rollback as enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe golf ball needs to be reined in,\u201d\u00a0 Nicklaus said. \u201cWhat they\u2019re doing right now is throwing a deck chair off the Titanic, and it\u2019s not getting enough done. It needs to really come back\u2026Now, the program that they have, as I understand it, will amount to about 12 yards for maybe a Rory McIlroy. It will amount to you all out there less than a yard. It really isn\u2019t going to affect you very much, but it will affect the pros a little bit.
