{"id":437933,"date":"2026-03-27T00:27:58","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T00:27:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=437933"},"modified":"2026-03-27T00:27:58","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T00:27:58","slug":"sam-ryder-says-he-accidentally-cheated-in-a-monday-qualifier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/sam-ryder-says-he-accidentally-cheated-in-a-monday-qualifier\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Ryder Says He Accidentally Cheated In A Monday Qualifier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it can be hard to remember all the rules, especially when they are changed.\u00a0 In the heat of the moment, it can be easy to break said rules and not even realise it until it is too late.\u00a0 Sam Ryder found himself in this exact situation and is only grateful that it wasn\u2019t during the actual event.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rule Change<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rule in question has to do with the free relief drop.\u00a0 It\u2019s a rule only implemented in special conditions, like right after a rainstorm, as was the case before the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/matt-fitzpatrick-criticizes-slow-play-at-valspar-championship\/\" target=\"_self\">Valspar Championship<\/a>.\u00a0 The idea is to avoid mudballs with just a simple lift, clean, and place.\u00a0 There is controversy with the place part as the rule stated that it can be within one club length of where the ball was initially.\u00a0 The full club length was always a controversial part of this rule.\u00a0 It was widely seen as giving the player too much of an advantage.\u00a0 As a result, the PGA adopted the DP World Tour\u2019s policy of a<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/ben-griffin-criticized-for-free-relief-drop\/\" target=\"_self\"> free relief drop.<\/a>\u00a0 It was changed from a club-length relief to the length of the scorecard.\u00a0 Ryder was not used to this new rule, and given that the season is still young, it slipped out of his head during the Valspar Monday qualifiers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sam Ryder On The Accidental Cheating<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Monday qualifier, Sam Ryder was doing pretty well for himself.\u00a0 He was under par and having a great time until it suddenly hit him that he had forgotten something important.\u00a0 He was, of course, using the old rules for the free relief.\u00a0 Ryder <a  href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/5EiKg4kuByIv5NQGaIEmwy?si=fJIvSsU7QiKo9LsIgW4dAA&amp;nd=1&amp;dlsi=9141f3d651964c08\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">went on the Any Given Monday Podcast and<\/a> explained the following to Ryan French.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/akshay-bhatia-and-other-players-withdraw-from-valspar\/\" target=\"_self\">withdrew<\/a> because I unintentionally cheated, actually,&#8221; Ryder tells French. &#8220;Because it was lift, clean, and place, which I knew was totally my fault, but I hadn&#8217;t played lift, clean, and place yet under the new rule. And I played nine holes, and I was three under, and I was kind of cruising along. I think six under got through. I was playing fine, and I realized I had not been doing scorecard length.
