{"id":437672,"date":"2026-02-22T21:18:43","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T21:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=437672"},"modified":"2026-02-22T21:18:43","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T21:18:43","slug":"jon-rahm-puts-ryder-cup-status-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/jon-rahm-puts-ryder-cup-status-at-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Jon Rahm Puts Ryder Cup Status At Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, LIV Golf and its players have been thrown a few bones from the larger golfing world.\u00a0 LIV has partial OWGR points available.\u00a0 LIV Golf has also gotten a partnership with the governing bodies as well.\u00a0 These all still come with some stipulations, with how a LIV event works, the OWGR felt it necessary to only award partial points.\u00a0 There\u2019s also the question about <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/jon-rahm-wont-be-taking-all-the-credit\/\" target=\"_self\">the Ryder Cup<\/a>.\u00a0 The DP World Tour does allow LIV golfers to play on the European Ryder Cup team.\u00a0 Given that they resolve their fines for joining the league.\u00a0 Jon Rahm was given these fines and refuses to pay them off, and this move is threatening his position for the next Ryder Cup in Ireland in 2027.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Rahm On The Fines<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fines themselves are related to events that Jon Rahm skipped to be in LIV Golf events.\u00a0 There is a compromise that the DPWT is willing to do with Rahm.\u00a0 The deal is that he pays off his previous fines and plays in the required events.\u00a0 Then he would be allowed to play in future LIV events without fear of penalty from the European Tour.\u00a0 Rahm has turned down this deal, according to the<a  href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/liv-golf-european-tour-rahm-ryder-cup-dfca0ffbdb613804056f92f0560b256d\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Associated Press,<\/a> as he doesn\u2019t think he should have to pay those fines.\u00a0 Specifically, the fines for playing in LIV Golf events that had no conflicting DPWT event scheduled.\u00a0 For that reason, he has appealed his fines to the Sports Resolution arbitration panel in the UK to clear his fines.\u00a0 The appeal process could mean that Rahm won\u2019t be able to compete in the next Ryder Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ryder Cup<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DPWT has linked these fines to Ryder Cup eligibility as part of the wider rejection of LIV Golf when the league was first established.\u00a0 This has been a point of conflict, to the point that other golfers have weighed in.\u00a0 Earlier this year,<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/rory-mcilroy-just-told-two-golf-stars-to-pay-6-million-and-fans-are-not-having-it\/\" target=\"_self\"> Rory McIlroy said that Rahm should just pay his fines<\/a>.\u00a0 McIlroy brought up the discussion about how, in the most recent Ryder Cup, there was controversy over <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/tom-watson-shares-his-opinion-on-us-ryder-cup-team-pay\/\" target=\"_self\">the US team being paid<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah, absolutely. My thing is, look, this is my opinion. We went really hard on the Americans last year about wanting paid to play the Ryder Cup, and we all sat up there and said that we would pay to play in Ryder Cups. There\u2019s two guys that can prove it.
