During the Farmers Insurance Open, Michael Brennan<\/a> had a fair opening.\u00a0 On the first day, he finished with a score of 70.\u00a0 All was well until it was brought to the attention of a PGA rules official that Brennan had violated rules regarding the green maps.\u00a0 The incident left him disqualified from the event, and Brennan would later clarify what happened to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rule Michael Brennan Broke<\/span><\/h2>\n

During Brennan\u2019s explanation of what happened, he did clarify the rule that he unknowingly broke.\u00a0 It was Local Rule G-11, which regards handwritten notes on green maps.\u00a0 They are only allowed in approved books and sheets, with limited information.\u00a0 It\u2019s a newer rule that was only implemented back in 2022.\u00a0 Brennan had made notes on the green map itself, which is something he didn\u2019t realize wasn\u2019t allowed, and he inadvertently told on himself.\u00a0 In Brennan\u2019s Instagram post<\/a>, he said the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust wanted to clear the air on what happened at the Farmers Insurance Open this week.\u00a0 I started working with a new course data analyst at the beginning of the week in an effort to improve my course strategy.\u00a0 The evening before each round, he sends the hole locations on green maps to help plan approach shots.\u00a0 After completion of my round, I asked him for clarification; he mentioned that I was not able to transcribe any details on the greens from his diagram into my yardage book.\u00a0 Upon learning this, I reached out to a PGA Tour Rules official, reporting my mistake, and was subsequently disqualified from the golf tournament.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Brennan sees this as a painful lesson for himself.\u00a0 A misstep of his own doing that cost him the tournament.\u00a0 He is holding his head up high and looking forward to the next tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael Brennan’s clarification showed a degree of humility and good sportsmanship.\u00a0 He also made sure to lay the blame on no one but himself.\u00a0 Fans took note of this and applauded Brennan for his honesty.\u00a0 It was a violation that he could have gotten away with entirely if he hadn\u2019t approached a rules official.\u00a0 Fans are calling Brennan\u2019s actions a great representation of the sport and calling him a man of integrity who could be a proper role model for other aspiring golfers, all while being incredibly professional about the situation.\u00a0 The fan response has been one of praise for the expected sportsmanship that comes with golf.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As his post stated, this will be a painful lesson for Brennan.\u00a0 A simple mistake that cost him an entire tournament.\u00a0 He is staying positive on the situation, though.\u00a0 Brennan\u2019s next tournament will be the Waste Management Phoenix Open<\/a> this coming weekend.\u00a0 He will be taking the lessons he has learned and will be careful not to run afoul of the rules again.\u00a0 He will also be looking into more ways to improve his strategy throughout the season, given that was his goal when he originally took those notes.\u00a0 For now, Michael Brennan is feeling humbled and hopeful as the next tournament is coming around the corner.<\/span><\/p>\n
