During the PGA Tour\u2019s efforts to address the pace of play<\/a>, the league took some measures to reduce the times throughout 2025.\u00a0 However, for 2026, the league took a radical step that has its fair share of criticism.\u00a0 It was the decision to reduce the Tour Cards from 125 to 100<\/a>.\u00a0 However, as reported by the Golf Channel<\/a>, the PGA is putting out a new financial aid program for the players who missed the cut to help make up the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Is The PGA Tour Giving These Grants?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The cuts to membership in the PGA Tour mean less opportunity for the players involved<\/a>.\u00a0 Specifically, the newer and lower-ranked players are going to have a harder time establishing or reestablishing themselves.\u00a0 Because of this, the PGA Tour sent out a memo to its players detailing the new program.\u00a0 This was a decision from the PGA Tour policy board, stating that the goal is \u201crewarding strong performers and supporting both players who are ascending through the system and those returning from the PGA Tour.\u201d\u00a0 With this new policy, two new financial programs were created to support the players who turn out even without exemptions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Member Support Program<\/span><\/h2>\n

This program is for the players who lost their exemptions at the end of the previous season.\u00a0 Anyone who fell under the hammer of the membership cuts can apply to the program; however, there are a couple of qualifiers.\u00a0 The qualifications start at the No. 126th position for the FedExCup; players at 125 and above do not qualify for the program.\u00a0 Players also need to reach a 12-event minimum.\u00a0 Meaning that they need to have participated in 12 events across the PGA and the Korn Ferry Tour.\u00a0 If a player qualifies, they will be awarded $150K for the season.\u00a0 Those earnings come with the qualifier that if a player manages to earn over that amount, they will have to pay some of it back.\u00a0 If a player doesn\u2019t earn over the amount given, they don\u2019t have to repay the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Pathways Player Achievement Grant<\/span><\/h2>\n

This is the second program aimed more towards the newer players who are looking to be rookies on the Tour in the near future.\u00a0 This program helps members of the Korn Ferry Tour (Nos. 21-75), the PGA Tour Americas (Nos. 1-10), and the PGA Tour U top five.\u00a0 This program will only provide players with $ 15,000, but there is no repayment requirement.\u00a0 That money belongs to the players, and they will do with it whatever they please.\u00a0 There is also no minimum event attendance, unlike the Member Support Program.<\/span><\/p>\n

PGA Tour Supporting Its Players<\/span><\/h2>\n

Despite the cuts in membership, the PGA is still looking to support its players.\u00a0 This extra help can help the players provide for themselves after losing their cards.\u00a0 However, they would have preferred to keep their cards.\u00a0 There is still plenty to criticise about the events leading up to this decision, but the PGA is taking steps to mitigate any harm that could be caused to the players.<\/span><\/p>\n
