{"id":436738,"date":"2025-09-13T02:08:42","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T02:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=436738"},"modified":"2025-09-13T02:08:42","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T02:08:42","slug":"greg-norman-sends-goodbye-message-after-leaving-liv-golf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/greg-norman-sends-goodbye-message-after-leaving-liv-golf\/","title":{"rendered":"Greg Norman Sends Goodbye Message After Leaving LIV Golf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four years ago, LIV Golf was founded and quickly started upsetting the entire golf landscape.\u00a0 When it started, the CEO, Greg Norman, was the first to lead the controversial league.\u00a0 However, now Norman is stepping away from LIV Golf and moving on to the next chapter of his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Norman\u2019s Message<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 10, at 4:55 PM, Norman wrote his message of departure on Facebook.\u00a0 In the message, he conveys his sense of pride for his work on LIV Golf.\u00a0 He mentions how the league helped globalize the sport and saw a broad audience.\u00a0 <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thegreatwhiteshark\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg Norman wrote in his goodbye messag<\/a>e:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Together, we built a movement that changed the game globally. We created opportunities for both players and fans and broadened the ecosystem of golf.&#8221; Norman wrote, &#8220;We truly globalized the game and expanded golf&#8217;s reach to fans around the world. We brought entertainment, innovation, and private equity into golf (including to the PGA Tour), positioning the sport as an asset class. It&#8217;s been an incredible chapter, and I&#8217;m so proud of what we accomplished. My commitment to do what was and still is, the right thing for golf, the players and fans never waivered.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With his departure,<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/01\/22\/liv-golf-shakeup-with-greg-norman-replacement\/\" target=\"_self\"> Greg Norman was replaced as CEO by Scott O\u2019 Nei<\/a>l at the beginning of the year.\u00a0 However, his contract only expired at the end of August.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Norman&#8217;s Idea For A Global League<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIV Golf isn\u2019t the only time Norman tried to create a global league to compete with the likes of the PGA.\u00a0 Back in the 1990s, Norman made plans to launch the World Golf Tour.\u00a0 An international circuit that never got off the ground and is now just a trivia fact.\u00a0 LIV Golf has been the first one to see some limited success, but has remained controversial for various reasons.\u00a0 Players like Rory McIlroy always criticized the renegade league.\u00a0 The main reason is its ties to the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF).\u00a0 The second reason is a dose of job poaching, as the top players in LIV were from other leagues and given generous sign-on bonuses with their contracts.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norman himself wasn\u2019t safe from <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/hudson-swafford-responds-to-scottie-scheffler\/\" target=\"_self\">the embargoes that other leagues have established<\/a> against LIV.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t allowed to attend a Masters Tournament and had to buy a ticket second-hand, a practice that the Augusta National Golf Club is trying to crack down on.\u00a0 Having a massive hand in LIV Golf has cost him quite a bit with other leagues, but he has no regrets in the matter and is happy with where the league took him.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After LIV<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Greg Norman leaving the league, the next question is what\u2019s next?\u00a0 Norman does have more plans.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/02\/03\/greg-normans-new-role-liv-golf-leadership\/\" target=\"_self\">For 2032, Norman will be part of the Organizing Committee<\/a> for the Brisbane Olympic Games.\u00a0 Norman described this as some \u201cexciting times\u201d, so despite no longer being CEO, he doesn\u2019t plan on slowing down.\u00a0 As for the future of LIV Golf, that is in the hands of Scott O\u2019Neil and the investors.\u00a0 For now, Greg Norman will continue to contribute to sport wherever he can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Photo Credit:\u00a0 \u00a9 Adam Cairns\/Columbus Dispatch \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four years ago, LIV Golf was founded and quickly started upsetting the entire golf landscape.\u00a0 When it started, the CEO, Greg Norman, was the first to lead the controversial league.\u00a0 However, now Norman is stepping away from LIV Golf and moving on to the next chapter of his life.
