{"id":436685,"date":"2025-09-06T02:20:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T02:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=436685"},"modified":"2025-09-06T02:20:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T02:20:07","slug":"rory-mcilroy-found-himself-on-the-shot-clock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/rory-mcilroy-found-himself-on-the-shot-clock\/","title":{"rendered":"Rory McIlroy Found Himself On The Shot Clock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the BMW Championship in August,<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/patrick-cantlay-shares-thoughts-on-shot-clock\/\" target=\"_self\"> Patrick Cantlay experienced the slow-play clock<\/a>.\u00a0 It is part of the larger<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/04\/22\/pga-tours-slow-play-problem-can-new-rules-finally-fix-it\/\" target=\"_self\"> slow-play crackdown the PGA has been doin<\/a>g this year.\u00a0 The PGA isn\u2019t the only league doing a crackdown, though.\u00a0 The DP World Tour in Europe is using similar techniques; it even has a slow-play clock for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/sergio-garcia-pulls-out-of-irish-open-after-ryder-cup-rejection\/\" target=\"_self\">Irish Open<\/a>.\u00a0 During said event, Rory McIlroy found himself playing against the clock.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McIlroy On The Clock<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rory McIlroy and his group were put on the clock twice during the first round.\u00a0 Once early on, and again for the final three holes.\u00a0 A penalty hasn\u2019t been handed out for being on the clock.\u00a0 It was later revealed that the clock wasn\u2019t due to McIlroy\u2019s playing style; he usually plays fast, but rather the crowds he attracts.\u00a0 He always has a big crowd of fans and media alike, and an issue that the DP World Tour had was trying to keep them moving.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McIlroy Responds To The Clock<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rory McIlroy was not impressed with the clock being pointed towards him.\u00a0 When asked earlier in the year about the pace of play rules for the PGA earlier in the year, he said that he supported them. However, he did specify at the time that he wouldn\u2019t know where to begin with it.\u00a0 However, in this case, he felt like he was not only being rushed, but that rush threw him off his game for the Irish Open.\u00a0 <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/offtheball\/status\/1963587431543795965?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1963587431543795965%7Ctwgr%5E3ca3026b195525e9fc0bcd581ef87b9c4e32130f%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.golfmonthly.com%2Fnews%2Fagitated-rory-mcilroy-calls-for-more-common-sense-after-slow-play-warnings-at-the-irish-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McIlroy told reporters<\/a> after the first round:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In all honesty, I felt a little rushed out there for the last 12 holes,&#8221; McIlroy told reporters. \u201cWe got put on the clock pretty early, and then the first official went away, and then we were put on the clock for the last three holes to try to make time up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McIlroy would continue to say that the officials weren\u2019t using common sense.\u00a0 He went on to say that there should be some leeway given, specifically with how the camera crews need time to set up their equipment and prepare to record.\u00a0 Something that the camera crews have to do several times a round.\u00a0 McIlroy would score two bogeys out of the last three holes.\u00a0 He would go on to say that he managed to contain his frustration and not \u201close my sh** on with officials.\u00a0 McIlroy goes on to say that this is a frequent issue whenever the OWGR top three play in the DP.\u00a0 He believes the players are getting rushed frequently because of the crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After The Irish Open<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the first round, McIlroy ended with a score of 71.\u00a0 He later made up for it in the second round with a score of 66 while finishing the day off T3 with three other players.\u00a0 This may lead McIlroy to show caution when attending DP events in the future.\u00a0 Especially when he has large groups following him around.\u00a0 In the meantime, after the Irish Open is done, McIlroy will be preparing for the Ryder Cup in New York.\u00a0 Hopefully, the shot clock won\u2019t need to be used there because of crowds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Photo Credit:\u00a0 \u00a9 Brett Davis-Imagn Images<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the BMW Championship in August, Patrick Cantlay experienced the slow-play clock.\u00a0 It is part of the larger slow-play crackdown the PGA has been doing this year.\u00a0 The PGA isn\u2019t the only league doing a crackdown, though.\u00a0 The DP World Tour in Europe is using similar techniques;
