The Northern Irishman, who has been one of Team Europe’s most important players for over a decade, said officials recently approached him about taking on both roles in 2027.

McIlroy Believes Playing Captain Is Impossible

McIlroy stood firm when reporters asked if he aspired to be a Ryder Cup playing captain. “No, I’ve been asked to do that and I turned it down. The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon has come up and I shut it down straight away. I don’t think you can do it,” he replied when probed further on why he turned down the idea.

McIlroy further explained that Ryder Cup captains have huge responsibilities even before the matches begin. They handle media duties, lead strategy meetings with vice-captains, work with event organizers, and prepare speeches for the opening ceremony. “I just think the commitment the captain has during the week is enormous — you think about the extra media obligations the captain has to do, you think about the extra meetings that the captain has to do with the vice-captain, with the PGA of America in Keegan’s case. You know, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony,” he said regarding the difficulty of being a playing captain.

“There’s a lot of things people don’t see that the captain does during the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big. If you had said this 20 years ago, I would have been like, ‘Yeah, I think it was probably possible to do.’ But with how big of a spectacle it has become and everything that’s on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a difficult position to be in.”

McIlroy Interested In Seeing How it All Plays Out

McIlroy’s comments come at a time when the U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley is facing the dilemma of whether to pick himself as a playing captain or not. Bradley is currently ranked 10th in the American points standings.
