{"id":436005,"date":"2025-07-26T01:02:23","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T01:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=436005"},"modified":"2025-07-26T01:02:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T01:02:23","slug":"ryan-gerard-had-plans-for-the-barracuda-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/ryan-gerard-had-plans-for-the-barracuda-championship\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryan Gerard Had Plans For The Barracuda Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/the-open-victories\/\" target=\"_self\">the Open Championship was underway<\/a>, there was another tournament taking place in California.\u00a0 The Barracuda Championship was seeing its own share of spectacle <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/scottie-scheffler-the-open\/\" target=\"_self\">while Scottie Scheffler was dominating the field at Royal Portrush<\/a>.\u00a0 The modified event saw a victor in Ryan Gerard as he took home the win.\u00a0 Yet despite winning, he found himself disappointed in how the tournament concluded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Baracuda Championship<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Barrcuda Championship is a bit of a weird tournament.\u00a0 Not in how the field is structured, but rather in how it is scored.\u00a0 The tournament was using a modified Stableford scoring system, meaning that a double bogey would be a -3 and a birdie was worth 2.\u00a0 This would also mean that it would be easier to fall behind, but also to get back ahead.\u00a0 This is exactly what Ryan Gerard experienced with fellow competitor Erik Van Rooyen. \u00a0 Rooyen managed to get a birdie on the last hole, which led to Gerard not being able to do what he had planned for the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Did Ryan Gerard Have Planned?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Gerard wanted to do was have this tournament go out in style.\u00a0 He wanted this because in an interview, he claimed that the event was in its last year.\u00a0 The way Gerard wanted to go was to walk right off the green on the last hole and just accept the penalty.\u00a0 <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SiriusXMPGATOUR\/status\/1948091262457860229?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1948091262457860229%7Ctwgr%5E36fe89e299914b76b84b0a5d52de8d2fddc8b586%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thegolfinggazette.com%2Fnews%2Fwhy-recent-pga-tour-winner-did-not-want-to-play-the-last-hole-of-the-tournament-despite-leading%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerard talked about the modified scoring system<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMade it a little bit more interesting than I would have liked in the end.\u00a0 I was a little bit disappointed that I didn\u2019t have a big enough lead going into 18 because I would have just scooped it, walked off, and taken the minus three, and walked into the clubhouse.\u00a0 That would have been the way to cap it because I know this event is probably in its last year.\u00a0 I was trying to go out in style, but Erik made birdie on the last so I had to actually get it in the hole.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A wild way to end a tournament in its final year.\u00a0 To just saunter off the field and casually meet everyone back in the clubhouse while still winning the prize.\u00a0 It would have certainly made the tournament stand out next to the major happening in Northern Ireland.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Gerard Still Victorious<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an alternate timeline all it would have taken was for Gerard\u2019s score to be a little bit higher, and everyone would be talking about him just walking off for years to come.\u00a0 His name would have been remembered as the man who swaggered off the field during the last hole and still won.\u00a0 Unfortunately, that is not what happened.\u00a0 Erik Van Rooyen scored higher than expected and Gerard had to see it to the end.\u00a0 There are no hard feelings between the two over this;
