Scheffler’s commanding victory at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush was not only a career milestone but also the center of an unexpected off-course mystery.

Someone passed gas during the broadcast of the Open Championship on Thursday. At the time, no one could say for sure who it was. The announcers heard it live and couldn’t help but laugh and make a few jokes about the unexpected sound.

Scheffler Admits “Strange Noise” Came From Him

Many believed it might have been World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. But it could just as easily have been a nearby fan, a caddie, or even a cameraman. Whoever it was, the odd moment turned into one of the funniest highlights of the tournament. The clip went viral, sparking wide speculation and amusement across social media. Now, days after winning the Claret Jug, Scheffler has addressed the incident and put the matter to rest.

Appearing on the Pardon My Take podcast, Scheffler confirmed what many had guessed: the noise came from him. He explained the situation with honesty and good humor, attributing it to long hours on the course and unfamiliar tournament food.

“Yeah, that was me. Oh, yeah. It was me,” Scheffler admitted when he was asked if the fart indeed came from him.” “You’re out there for like six hours. You’re eating some different food over there. Some stuff’s gonna happen. You never know when the boom mics there. You never know what they’re gonna pick up.

“I’m definitely surprised it hasn’t happened more in the past, picking up stuff like that. I literally didn’t think anything about it, then after we got inside, Xander (Schauffele) was showing me the video. He pulls up the video, and I see myself standing on 17 and I’m like, ‘Oh, I know what this is.’”

Scheffler Says “Strange Noise” Was “Perfect”

The incident did not distract Scheffler from his performance. The World No. 1 maintained focus throughout the tournament, finishing at 17 under par and winning by four strokes. His final round of 68 sealed the victory and marked one of the most composed performances of his career.

Jul 16, 2024; Ayrshire, SCT;
Scottie Scheffler during press conference at the Open Championship golf tournament at Royal Troon.
