With the first round of The Open<\/a> having concluded Thursday evening, those in competition walked away with some positives and negatives as well. One in particular being Bryson DeChambeau who finished plus seven after one round. A performance now almost requires a low round Friday to stay alive and into the weekend play. Not only was it a lackluster performance, but the second time ever in Chambeau\u2019s major championship run without a birdie. That performance is not good enough by any means when in attendance at The Open, a long awaited major championship in the Tour. A turnaround Friday will leave the door somewhat open for the veteran to make a push.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Career Low\u2019s For DeChambeau\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first round of any major championship brings understandable jitters, especially when you’re competing at The Open. Putting together just the seco<\/span>nd round in his career<\/a> without a birdie, many are questioning the readiness of DeChambeau. The low success in his iron play as of late has made a huge impact, now putting him in unfamiliar waters. Losing more than four strokes to the field<\/a> with his approach play, an all or nothing approach should be the expected game plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust having fun out here this week is what I\u2019m trying to accomplish, and just being strategic,\u201d DeChambeau said.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Being strategic was an understandable approach to begin with, but now certain circumstances require a new mentality. A mentality that will insist on an almost beyond perfect round from DeChambeau. One outside element that has seemed to be a disadvantage, is the wind coming in throughout. A concern that the veteran expressed in pre-competition talks with the media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re doing some testing right now, and going to continue to look at how different types of wind affect the golf balls,\u201d DeChambeau said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Birdies Hard To Come By\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With just the only second round ever in his career, the pro from Modesto finished with not a single birdie put up. The game of golf has an interesting way of keeping those in competition level headed, a key aspect for round two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately the footprint I want to leave is inspiring this generation to play this great game that we all love,\u201d DeChambeau said.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Many have already written DeChambeau off and expect to see his name in the cut list, yet they don\u2019t have the final answer. That answer will come in better approach play, strong control through wind, and a true wanting to play through the weekend. With not much to lose in the sense of tournament standing, those in attendance should await a round full of chances.<\/span><\/p>\n
