With the Rocket Classic around the corner, the playing field is taking shape with some surprises.\u00a0 James Piot is making his grand PGA return,<\/a> and fans are already making their bets on the players.\u00a0 Unfortunately, some players are dropping out of the event.\u00a0 Not as many as the RBC Canadian Open<\/a> just a few short weeks ago.\u00a0 The list currently sits at seven, but there are notable names in that list, including Tony Finau.\u00a0 A player who is in a position where he should reconsider that decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tony Finau Withdraws<\/span><\/h2>\n

The news of Finau\u2019s withdrawal doesn\u2019t come with his reasoning for doing so.\u00a0 As of right now, it is anyone\u2019s guess as to why he is doing this.\u00a0 There are theories that it has something to do with his surgery from last year.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t the first event he withdrew from this year.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t attend the Zurich Classic<\/a>, a move for which he has received criticism.\u00a0 The official PGA Tour Communications Twitter account put out he news<\/a> in the early afternoon on Tuesday.\u00a0 There, they announced that Joseph Bramlett will be taking Finau\u2019s spot unless something else happens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finaus Standing<\/span><\/h2>\n

Tony Finau has had a rough 2025.\u00a0 This is why he was criticised for pulling out of the Zurich Classic back in April, and there is no doubt that he\u2019ll be criticised for this withdrawal too.\u00a0 Joseph Lamanga made this criticism when Finau initially withdrew from the Zurich Classic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m telling you, that\u2019s one of my biggest notes for this \u2013 where\u2019s Tony Finau, and I\u2019m serious. He should be playing in this,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s having a bad year, he\u2019s 46th in the FedEx Cup, he may not be in the top 50 at the end of this year.\u00a0 Fits this place well.\u00a0 If he got a decent partner and teed it up, that could be the difference at the end of the year in having status in the signature events or not.\u00a0 A lot of guys are going to look back on this and regret not playing it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He still only has one top-ten finish for the year, dating back to the Genesis Invitational.\u00a0 He has made two out of three major cuts and finished T19 at the PGA Championship.\u00a0 However, his OWGR ranking has been slipping; he is currently at No. 44.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2025 Season<\/span><\/h2>\n

Tony Finau\u2019s decision to withdraw will baffle golf fans.\u00a0 His ranking will only slip if he doesn\u2019t attend events.\u00a0 Sure, he has not been performing well this year with a \u201clackluster performance,\u201d but any opportunity not taken can only negatively impact him at this point.\u00a0 His FedEx Cup rank will continue to slip, and he was already sitting at 46th during the Zurich Classic.\u00a0 There were doubts that Finau wouldn\u2019t be able to turn this season around before it concludes.\u00a0 Currently, it looks like those who were claiming that will be proven right.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finau is still a fairly skilled player.\u00a0 He is in the top 50 on the OWGR after all, and there will be plenty of chances for him to improve his game.\u00a0 He may not be able to turn this season on its head, but he can still surprise everyone in the 2026 season.<\/span><\/p>\n
