{"id":434700,"date":"2025-05-09T02:21:52","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T02:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/?p=434700"},"modified":"2025-05-09T02:21:52","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T02:21:52","slug":"joaquin-niemann-is-told-to-return-to-pga-for-chance-at-major","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/joaquin-niemann-is-told-to-return-to-pga-for-chance-at-major\/","title":{"rendered":"Joaquin Niemann is Told To Return To PGA For Chance At Major"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of any pro golfer\u2019s dream is to win a major event.\u00a0 There are four major events held throughout the year: the Masters, the PGA Championship, the US Open, and the Open Championship.\u00a0 This year, LIV Golf star Joaquin Niemann has set his sights on winning one.\u00a0 However, with LIV Golf\u2019s current standing in the world and how different each event is from other tours, it has been suggested that Niemann should return to the PGA to stand a better chance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niemann\u2019s Current Standing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time of writing, Niemann is sitting comfortably at the top of LIV.\u00a0 Since joining the league as it launched, he has worked his way to the number one position in LIV.\u00a0 With five LIV wins, he is set to start breaking records in the still fairly new league.\u00a0 Outside of LIV is where the problems start.\u00a0 Like all players in LIV, earning OWGR points is an uphill battle.\u00a0 The only opportunities for points are outside the LIV circuit.\u00a0 During major events, he has been to Niemann has yet to register in the top ten.\u00a0 So, what is a golfer to do in this situation to improve one\u2019s standing?\u00a0 Curtis Strange has an idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Return To The PGA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curtis Strange has stated that Niemann needs to return to the PGA if he wants a chance to win a major.\u00a0 <a  href=\"https:\/\/espnpressroom.com\/us\/press-releases\/2025\/05\/transcript-of-espn-pga-championship-media-conference-call-3\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In a conference call, Strange says<\/a> that Niemann is just not around the biggest and best players in the world right now.\u00a0 Niemann is not getting his skill honed under the pressure to keep up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think the first thing Joaqu\u00edn has to do is get over [to the PGA Tour] and play more regular golf on the bigger stages against the better players in the world,&#8221; he told reporters.\u00a0 &#8220;I\u2019m not knocking anybody, but it\u2019s just the reality of when you\u2019re not on that stage as often as these other players are playing the regular Tour, then you might not be as comfortable as if you were doing it on a regular basis. Certainly a wonderful player.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defecting from LIV back to the PGA will be an issue for his standing as per the PGA\u2019s year-long suspension policy.\u00a0 He could go the same route as<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/03\/14\/laurie-canter-jumps-from-liv-to-pga\/\" target=\"_self\"> Laurie Canter and keep his game up in another league<\/a> while waiting out the suspension.\u00a0 However, Joaquin Niemann doesn\u2019t seem too interested in jumping ship again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niemann Right Now<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niemann is fairly loyal to LIV Golf right now.\u00a0 As stated before, he is at the top of the league&#8217;s charts, and he has five wins under his belt.\u00a0 Sure, the other players in the league don\u2019t have much in terms of ranking on the OWGR.\u00a0 Only two are in the top 100, but they are still incredibly skilled players.\u00a0 Dustin Johnson was in the No. 1 position before joining LIV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niemann is still looking forward to competing in the majors.\u00a0 His performance has earned him opportunities to play in the majors through an invitation.\u00a0 He managed to finish the Masters T29 with Denny McCarthy and saw <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/04\/14\/rory-mcilroy-and-the-five-legends-who-completed-golfs-grand-slam\/\" target=\"_self\">McIlroy\u2019s grand slam<\/a>.
