With the Zurich Classic now in the past with Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin taking the honors, a few players were noticeably missing.\u00a0 Billy Horschel had to withdraw due to a back injury, but there was also Tony Finau, who opted to skip the classic.\u00a0 It was a move that garnered some criticism given his fairly rough season, and it could negatively affect his ranking for the FedEx Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finau\u2019s Rough 2025<\/span><\/h2>\n

For the 2025 season, Tony Finau has tried for 11 events without a single win.\u00a0 Not only was he cut from four of those events, but only made the top ten once during the Genesis Invitational.\u00a0 Aside from those, he was only in the top 20 twice.\u00a0 This has resulted in him currently being at 46th for the FedEx Cup.\u00a0 Needless to say, it has not been a good year for Finau.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Skipping The Zurich Classic<\/span><\/h2>\n

With Finau skipping Zurich, his ranking could easily drop further.\u00a0 This is where a lot of criticism comes.\u00a0 On the Shotgun Start podcast, Joseph Lamagna lays out why Finau should be at the classic.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m telling you, that\u2019s one of my biggest notes for this \u2013 where\u2019s Tony Finau<\/em>, and I\u2019m serious. He should be playing in this,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s having a bad year, he\u2019s 46th in the FedEx Cup, he may not be in the top 50 at the end of this year.\u00a0 Fits this place well.\u00a0 If he got a decent partner and teed it up, that could be the difference at the end of the year in having status in the signature events or not.\u00a0 A lot of guys are going to look back on this and regret not playing it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lamagna is not alone in this criticism.\u00a0 The entire golf world is sharing this opinion.\u00a0 Finau\u2019s absence is a mistake of the highest order.\u00a0 He could use the unique way the classic works to his advantage.\u00a0 Given that this is one of the few PGA team events, if he had a good partner, he could have given his ranking a boost.\u00a0 The benefits for him were obvious; skipping the event would only leave him even further behind.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tony Finau\u2019s Rankings<\/span><\/h2>\n

It has been a rough 2025 for Finau.\u00a0 His performance has been called lackluster, underwhelming, and disappointing.\u00a0 Only being in the top ten once all season, he\u2019s in a bit of a hard place.\u00a0 Skipping Zurich is such a baffling decision that everyone is calling it a grave mistake.\u00a0 This has been a year full of upsets and surprises.\u00a0 Just this year, there have been two new rookies who are already making names for themselves.\u00a0 Aldrich Potgieter is already setting records with his strong swing<\/a>, and Danny Walker won the hearts of fans<\/a> after getting into the Player Championship as an alternate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>With his performance this year, Tony Finau has not been in a good position.\u00a0 With him skipping Zurich, it\u2019s hard to say that he will bounce back before the start of the next season.<\/span><\/p>\n
