The Englishman is currently leading his way at the Augusta National in his Masters debut. The 30-year-old’s best finish in a major championship is a T19 finish, which he achieved at both the 2021 Open and the 2024 U.S. Open. Rai wore two gloves instead of the usual one on his Masters debut.

The Englishman, who also adorns his clubs with iron headcovers revealed that he couldn’t play on one certain occasion when he tried to take off one of his gloves. Rai explained that he learned the habit of adorning his clubs with iron headcovers from his father, who taught him to appreciate the value of the equipment. The 30-year-old says he has been protecting his clubs with iron headcovers long before he became a pro.

Rai’s Unique Golf Gear Choices Down To His Father’s Teachings

Wearing two gloves and adorning clubs with iron headcovers are uncommon practices, as most golfers wear a single glove and leave their other hand bare in order to give them a better grip. The Englishman who made his Masters debut today, explained that his working-class father is the reason behind what appears to be his unusual choice of gear.

“It started when I was eight years old and it persisted with my dad’s influence,” the 30-year-old explained. “ “I just happened to be given these two gloves – the guy who actually makes them sent a pair over – and I got into the habit of wearing them.

Then, a few weeks down the line, my dad forgot to put the two gloves in the bag so I had to play with one. It was terrible. I couldn’t play, I couldn’t feel the grip, so I’ve always stuck with the two gloves ever since.”

However, Rai is not just known for his choice of wearing two gloves. He also loves to adorn his clubs with iron headcovers. Although this practice is uncommon among golfers, Rai attributes this act to his father’s influence.

Rai Places Importance on His Background

Rai also revealed that he places importance on his background and explained the significance of the equipment he uses. The 30-year-old turned professional in 2012 before winning three titles on the Challenge Tour. He made his PGA Tour debut in 2022 and won the Wyndham Championship in 2024.

“I grew up in very much a working-class family, and golf has always been a very expensive game. I started from the age of four years old, and my dad used to pay for the equipment, pay for my memberships, my entry fees,” he explained.

Main Photo Credit: © Doug Engle/Florida Times-Union / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Aaron Rai has revealed the real reasons behind his unique golf gear choices.
