Justin Thomas has worked his way into conversations with not only his expected play, but change of caddie as well. His designated caddie in Matt Minister had an unfortunate injury to his back, resulting in a needed replacement. One was found in Joe Greiner, the previous caddie to Max Homa for a decade plus before a split after the Players Championship. With arguably the most anticipated tournament to come this season, Thomas will be in for a challenge. One surrounded upon the play of the field, and sudden change of caddie.

Justin Thomas In Good Hands

Greiner has been in the PGA limelight for quite some time, securing six Tour victories with Homa in his time. His veteran assistance will now be handed over to the 15 time PGA tour winner in Thomas. The change is one that will be difficult due to the circumstances, but clutch in timing before such a big tournament. Something Thomas voiced in an Instagram story posting Tuesday evening.

“Unfortunately, my caddie Rev hurt his back this week and isn’t able to be on the bag with me this week at Augusta,” Thomas posted Tuesday night on his Instagram story. “Rev is resting up so he gets better soon. I’m very lucky Joe Greiner is a great friend and able to help me out last minute.”

In the last five Master showings for Thomas, he has now had four different caddies including Greiner. Securing top tier help from those like Jimmy Johnson, Jim Mackay, and Minister. If there is one thing the veteran has experience in, it is the sudden change of internal surroundings. Being able to adjust to this circumstance will be the difference maker in a successful outing come Wednesday afternoon.

Opportunity For Masters Glory

With lots of talk ahead of the tournament for Thomas, due to his sudden caddie change. He has the chance to live up to his expectation or continue to come up just short. In recent play at the Valspar Championship, he held a lead with three holes remaining but lost to Viktor Hovland. Thomas, a two-time major champion, sits at an impressive No.8 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Being top ten is nothing to brush off by any means, but there is still improvement to be made and met.

That can start with a strong first round, to kick off The Masters Tournament. Not having a win since playing in the 2022 PGA Tournament, expectation and anxiety should be high. There is no blueprint in securing a win come Wednesday, but the experience of Greiner will be worthwhile in the corner of Thomas.

In the 2024 Masters Tournament, Scottie Scheffler had the luxury of taking home the victory. He will be looking for yet another back to back tournament win, showcasing his top tier talent. Those like Thomas will have the opportunity to ensure they spoil those plans, maybe even securing the win at the end.

Main Photo Credit: © Peter Casey-Imagn Images

With the prestigious Masters Tournament to take place this week, all eyes will be on many of the top athletes in the world.
