Is Still Looking To Purchase Wentworth Golf Club For LIV Golf

Currently, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) is looking to purchase the Wentworth Golf Club to use for LIV Golf events. Despite the current owners insisting that the course is not for sale, the PIF is pressing on and looking to make offers. With all that happening it is important to ask why they want this club, and what does Wentworth have to offer?

Wentworth Golf Club

Wentworth is an iconic golf course that has hosted major events for the PGA but it is primarily home for the DP World Tour. Based near London, the club has hosted many events, such as the BMW PGA Championships. English Golfer Eddie Pepperell created some confusion in November 2024, saying, “I was told this week by someone who would know that they are buying Wentworth. The PIF are buying Wentworth, for sure. That’s what I was told.”

The club is primarily owned by Reignwood Group, a Chinese-run organization that bought the club in 2014, and they are currently not interested in any offers to buy the club. They were quick to shoot down any ideas of them selling the club in a statement last November.

“Wentworth Club has previously commented that they are not in conversation with the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund in relation to the sale of the club and that remains the case,” the group said. “Reignwood Group is committed to its long-term vision for Wentworth and continues to invest in the club facility.”

Reignwood Group continues to deny any chance of the club being bought. Any offers made have been presumably denied.

The PIF’s Other Efforts

Wentworth is not the only club being eyed by the PIF. They are also looking to purchase the Centurion Golf Club, which is also based in London. However, Centurion doesn’t have the same prestige and iconic feel as Wentworth but is more likely to play out fine. Centurion did however host LIV Golf’s inaugural event back in 2022.

Despite PGA-LIV merger talks, the PIF seems to want to continue to expand LIV as much as they can despite LIV struggling in viewership, and revenue. Liv is also having trouble keeping its own players like with recent rumors around Bryson DeChambeau. It is speculated that the acquisition of the club could be a way to get the PGA onto the negotiation table. This would also complicate the deal by involving the DP Tour.

Why Wentworth?

The benefits of acquiring Wentworth are obvious. According to the official website, the club has a history with royalty and the foundation of major tournaments. The course itself was established in 1922, but the club was originally the residence of the Duke of Wellington’s extended family back in 1805. The club prides itself on its historical significance and as being a prestigious retreat. Located in London and within earshot of Windsor Castle, this club makes its value obvious to any onlooker. In the golf world, it is advertised as the birthplace of the Ryder Cup back in 1926. Back then it was known as the International Match. It has also hosted the British Masters, the Canada Cup, and the World Match Play. Anyone given the opportunity to own the club would be foolish not to accept.

Will There Be A Sale?

At the time of writing, all claims that the club is for sale are being denied. Reignwood Group intends to keep the course and is looking to continue investing in the sports they host there. The PIF however seems intent on somehow acquiring the club and all that comes with it. Making such a move may prove more difficult than expected.

Main Photo Credit: © Soobum Im-Imagn Images

Currently, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) is
