{"id":433687,"date":"2025-03-14T10:32:59","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T14:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/?p=433687"},"modified":"2025-04-23T16:39:39","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T16:39:39","slug":"jason-day-players-championship-withdraw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/jason-day-players-championship-withdraw\/","title":{"rendered":"Jason Day Withdraws From TPC, Possibly From Vertigo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Thursday, March 3rd, PGA Tour Communications announced that Jason Day has withdrawn from the 2025 Players Championship due to Illness.\u00a0 This came just before the first round began, and the event was quick to fill in the gap Day left behind.\u00a0 Day was originally set to tee off at 8:46 am, but one of this season&#8217;s noticeable rookies, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/01\/31\/danny-walker-after-farmers-insurance-open\/\" target=\"_self\">Danny Walker<\/a>, has taken his spot instead.\u00a0 Now what happened to Jason Day to make him withdraw?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Jason Day&#8217;s Medical History<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is unclear what this illness is, but some are speculating that it has to do with the vertigo that he has been struggling with since 2015.\u00a0 This is a common type that has the most obvious symptom of the trademark dizziness.\u00a0 This made itself publicly known with Jason Day when he collapsed at the 18th hole during the 2015 US Open.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t stop him from winning the championship that same year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This has been something Day has been struggling with for some time now.\u00a0 He has mostly been living with it the best he can, with a couple hiccups here and there.\u00a0 His vertigo is fairly inconsistent with when it will take effect.\u00a0 Most days he is doing fine, and others he risks collapsing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How He Has Been Handling The Vertigo<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Day, his vertigo hasn\u2019t made itself too bad:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe first time it happened to me was 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay and I didn\u2019t know how to handle it,\u201d Day said.\u00a0 \u201c&#8230;I really haven\u2019t had too many bouts of it; it would typically come for about three holes or so and then like gradually got better and better and I\u2019m like OK, I feel kind of dizzy and nauseous, but I can get through this, no problem.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whenever it hits him, he soldiers through it and tries to continue on. He believes that the stress of the competition is one of the key factors that may trigger it.\u00a0 Like in the 2023 Masters, when it hit him between rounds.\u00a0 In a<a  href=\"https:\/\/www.pgatour.com\/article\/news\/latest\/2023\/05\/03\/jason-day-confirms-he-is-fighting-vertigo-again-wells-fargo-masters-wgc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> press conference<\/a> he said the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u201cOverall, I know exactly what happened,\u201d<\/em> Day said.\u00a0 <em>\u201cIt is obviously the stress of playing the game, and I understand there\u2019s obviously competitive stress and there\u2019s stress outside the game that is totally separate that everyone goes through as well.\u00a0 When you put yourself under stressful conditions all the time, sooner or later your immune system gets compromised.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t eating as healthy as I should have, so I made some changes to my diet.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Day&#8217;s Thoughts on The Vertigo<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Day claims that it is caused by an ear infection in the same press conference as before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u201c&#8230;It\u2019s a virus that attacks my inner ear,\u201d<\/em> he continued, <em>\u201cwhich is the vestibular nerve in the ear, so when that happens you can\u2019t get rid of a virus obviously, the only way you can do it is suppress it.\u00a0 I just needed to take some time off, that was pretty much plain and simple.\u00a0 And then obviously on top of it just rework how I come to the golf course and work as well.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the time of writing, it is still unknown what caused his withdrawal and the vertigo theory is merely speculation.\u00a0 Day is not the only one facing medical issues right now, both Tiger Woods and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/03\/07\/xander-schauffele-cuts-streak\/\" target=\"_self\">Xander Schauffele<\/a> are struggling with injuries.
